Pipe smokes really wet

Right I just got into pipe smoking again, and have a slight problem.
Whenever I smoke there is a ridiculous amount of liquid (often it pours into my mouth which is disgusting).
Am I smoking wrong and therefore spit is going in? Or is my tobacco not dry enough? Or what am I doing wrong :cursing:
Never had this problem before.

Cheers mates.

Let the tobacco dry more, and when it starts to gurgle or smoke wet run a pipe cleaner down the stem into the bowl.

You should try smoking on dry land. Hope that helps!

Probably need to let it dry out a bit more. You can try sticking a pipe cleaner down as you smoke to absorb some of the liquid.

The lip (Idk the front bit of the stem) is so bloody narrow I can't fit a pipe cleaner down it. Guess I will have to wait for the baccy to dry more, was just curious if I was smoking wrong and drooling into the pipe

That stinks that you can't shove a pipe cleaner down there, those things work great. Maybe try cleaning the pipe stem thoroughly and drying out the tobacco more. Does this happen with multiple brands of tobacco?

Shame but it is what it is. Will clean the pipe stem again today, and will let the tobacco dry. It is mainly with my Germains Plum Cake, and the tobacco feels quite moist.

Also slow down.
Assuming you moved to cigars when you gave up pipes before, the most common problem for cigar and cigarette smokers moving to a pipe is smoking too quickly. This overheats the bowl, and also draws more evaporated juice from the 'baccy into the shank.
Smoking more slowly allows the juice to evaporate more slowly and be carried off above the bowl, and helps prevent condensation in the shank.

Haha I am a student, if I had the money to smoke lots of cigars I'd be happy
I smoke cigars maybe twice a year for special occasions, and I quit cigarettes two years ago.
I don't overheat the bowl (I hold it up to my cheek if I think if I am unsure how hot it is), or at least it hasn't been hot on my cheek, warm yes but not hot.
But I will double check to make sure the speed is okay, cheers for the info.

Just thought about this but do you clench the pipe in your mouth much when smoking? Or do you just have it in your mouth when puffing? Might be some saliva making it's way down the stem. Just brainstorming

That's my problem. When I clench, I automatically start slobbering up the pipe. It's like my dog after she drinks from a bowl of water.

That is what I was thinking... no I don't really clench it much in my mouth as I don't find it comfortable. I have never had this problem before. Will have a check to see if it my fault.

I am a clencher and a slobberer as well. I'm usually on my laptop, driving, or working on pipes when I smoke. I prefer pipes that I can get a pipe cleaner in because I'll go through four or five with one pipe session. Having a lot of moisture in the pipe can also change and mute much of the flavor of the tobacco. If you have some tools (files, or a dremel or even a drill with a small bit) it's possible to open up the end of the pipe just a bit so that it's easier to get a cleaner in it.

Don't have any tools, also there is not a lot of room for error with this stem

FWIW Falcon pipe cleaners can be had on ebay for pretty cheap.

+1 to everyone who said slow down, and if you can get pipe cleaners that fit in there, if it starts to get too wet, use one. Drying such a moist blend might help your cause as well.

I'm a pretty new pipe smoker too, so I feel your pain and frustration (not to mention tobacco condensation is disgusting when it gets it your mouth.)

Also, just as a final quick suggestion, you said the problem is the worst with your German Plum tobacco? Sounds very aromatic, try some drier blends. I have yet to try anything near a "straight up" virginia or burley. But I found that the "medium english" blend I purchased not that long ago, (red virginia and burley with only a few aromatic additives) helped me improve my smoking techniqe dramatically and rapidly. If I get gurgle with that blend I know the error is on me for poor packing, or too fast of smoking.
