What's new

Pinaud Clubman not for me, what else?

So I picked some up at the drugstore. Maybe my hopes were too high. I really wanted to like it since its inexpensive and easy to get.

I will say I'm just starting into aftershaves so I may come back to it. Initially I got a good reaction from SWMBO but later that cooled as I wore it a few times. I like it better than no aftershave but its just not for me.

There's something in there, some sweet notes, like vanilla maybe that just dont hit me right.

Aside from getting some samples from gary, I was thinking of throwing it on the BST to get a different Pinaud, maybe VIBR? Any other suggestions on the lower end of what might be good for a newbie?

+1 VIBR. Great warming, great clean feel to the skin after using, great smell - altho for a Bay Rum some find it to have too much spice (cloves).

As far as locally available, I enjoy using Skin Bracer and Aqua Velva regularly too. None of these 3 could be described as sweet or vanilla.

Cheers

I knew it couldnt be long before someone brought up the veg. I'll be getting a sample of that first before i commit to anything.

I read that VIBR was a little spicier but that does sound up my alley.

Aqua Velva is pretty good for an inexpensive AS (around $4.) It's sold at most grocery/drug stores in the US.

Another one you don't hear about much on B&B is Gillette aftershave gel. I like it a lot for the price - under $3. It soothes the skin and has a nice masculine scent.

If you love menthol, try the Barbasol Pacific Rush from Dollar General. It's in the $2 range and has a light fresh scent.

I think public opinion is swaying me towards VIBR. Has anyone seen this in stores that carry clubman? Walgreens, CVS, RiteAid, etc?

The Special Reserve is awesome too. Makes you smell like you should be sitting in worn leather armchairs listening to Miles Davis with Ernest Hemingway.

(God I love that description. They should buy it from me and print it on the bottle.)

If you want something bright and refreshing (and more modern), Aqua Velva Ice Sport is a great choice. I like old school aftershaves, but Ice Sport is a nice updated change of pace. Smells a lot like Cool Water.

And, as Adam says, Barbasol Pacific Rush smells great, is dirt cheap, and is very cooling. Another one to put in rotation.

I secretly applied the clubman for the first time with my girlfriend sitting in the same room and she started asking why she could smell baby wipes all of the sudden. I'm sure others have said the same thing. The scent did mellow after that but I thought clubman got a bad rap because some company stole the clubman scent and started using it for baby wipes a long time ago which makes people think Clubman smells like baby wipes when in reality the scent is so good that they wanted all the little butts to smell like Clubman. In a way, BBS and Clubman are eternally tied together.

I also second that referral for Aqua Velva Ice Sport. I sometimes use this first and then put a balm over it and my lady friend loves it. I just bought two bottles of it and put them in a nice round glass container with a cork top.

I had a small sample of the Nivia, but i'm not sure it was the SS. I did like it thought, I'll probably look for more. No luck on VIBR around town so far.

And I looked at the bottle and I think I identified geraniol as the scent I don't like. That sweetish pungent (does that even make sense?) flower smell. At least that makes me feel better that I will like other Pinaud's.
