What's new

Picky, picky, picky

Ok, so I'm having difficulties finding a scent that both SWMBO and I like. After having a chat with The Knize, I decided to ask you gents for some advice.

Ok, so here are the EDTs which I have tried in my life and remember liking:
Cool Water - Used it through most of middle school... I guess I liked it
Hugo Boss - Meh
Kenneth Cole New York - I like this
Eddie Bauer Adventurer - I think it's OK, SWMBO doesn't like it

Ok, on top of that, here are the aftershaves I have tried:
Old Spice - not a fan
Ogallala Bay Rum - I like it, but SWMBO doesn't
Pinaud - no
Lilac Vegetal - NO! :scared:
Speick - I really like the soap stick scent, but didn't like the AS
Musgo - SWMBO didn't like it
Marlborough - smelled like a plank of wood. I like that, but not on me
Arlington - I like this a little, but SWMBO doesn't
TOBS Mr. Taylors - Too much like old man
Brut - I like this. Been wearing it since I started shaving
SCS Mediterranean Citrus - I like this, SWMBO thinks it's OK
SCS Sandalwood - I love this, SWMBO doesn't
SCS Lavender - I like this as an AS, but not as an EDT
SCS Nutriment - I really like this!
SCS Aspect - Not too bad....
MB Lime Ice - I like this, and so does SWMBO!
Alt-Innsbruk - Too sweet
La Toja - Just wasn't for me
Floid - Weird scent

Other shaving product scents I like which weren't *** or EDTs:
TOBS Eton College - I really like this in the shaving cream
MB Sandalwood Vanilla - Manly, but soft!
MB Spellbound Woods - Similar to sandalwood vanilla in its manliness
SCS Vetiver - Not sure if it want just this scent as an EDT, but mixed?
SCS Dagger - I really like this!
Trumper GFT - This smells very traditional to me
T&H 1805 - Very fresh! Wouldn't mind smelling a bit like this from time to time.

Ok, so as you can see, citrusy scents are winners in this family, but I don't always want to smell like a freaking lime!

So, do you gents have any suggestions, based on the above?

I have it on good authority that this doesn't smell like "Old Man";

I won't reveal right now the scents Andres and I discussed and/or that I suggested. I will be interested in what others on this board come up with.

Antique Hoosier

“Aircooled”
You might find Floris JF to your liking. I prefer the aftershave splash to either the balm or the EDT.... I have all three and have used them (sometimes layering all three scents after a shave) for a few years now as a diversion away from either Alt Innsbruck as an aftershave splash or from Floris Santal which is my usual go to EDT.... So I'd say try a bottle of JF aftershave splash first not only for the scent but it is a darn good aftershave for your skin as well.

Ok, so far, you guys have suggested:

Floris JF
Acqua Di Parma Colonia Assoluta
Bulgari pour Homme Extreme
Pinaud Clubman Special Reserve

How does Special Reserve compare to their standard scent? I wasn't a fan of that.

Floris seems to be exactly up my alley, what with the strong citrus notes. The other two are intriguing enough that I will be looking for samples shortly! Keep em coming, gents! And thanks!! :w00t:

How about Monsieur Balmain? A blast of citrus up front with a nice woodsy background. Very lemony (rather than limey) on application, but mellows nicely to a sandalwood-ish scent.

Very reasonable price, too.

That does sound good. I presume that the "new" formula is similar to the old?

Ok, so I've looked up all of your suggestions, and I think they're interesting enough that I want to try them all! (a common problem in this forum)

So, based on what I've read, I'm ranking them as such:
Habit Rouge - Anything with citrusy top notes is great with me, but I think the base notes of vanilla and amber will be very nice, although I might like that more than SWMBO, but that's ok!
JF - Again, citrus top notes but the woodsy base might be really nice
Acqua Di Parma Colonia AssolutaA - Citrus, cedarwood and vetiver. I do love vetiver and would find it very interesting in a cologne. (oh, and The Knize suggested this one as well!)
Bulgari pour homme Extreme - Now this is a bit different then the above with a floral head. The middle notes of tea and nutmeg with a base of oakmoss and sandalwood sounds great!
Clubman Special Reserve - leather. vanilla. seems manly and at that price, why the heck not?!
Monsieur Balmain - SWMBO will probably like this guy as it is essentially lemon... and I think it would be a great summer fragrance!
GFT Portugal - Sweet orange and musk. Seems simple and right up my alley.
Pomegranate Noir - I'm not 100% sure of this one. It's intriguing, but I'm not sure how pomegranate, raspberry and patchouli will work out together or with me. I'm curious enough to try it though.

So now I set off to try and find samples for as many of these as I can. Thanks gents!

Here are some less expensive ones to throw in the mix.

Canoe. It's been around a long time, you can check it out on basenotes. It think this might even come in an EDT. But get the strongest you can find (at least cologne).

Also, if you like Brut, there is a Brut cologne though it doesn't seem all that easy to find. Some Walgreen's have it I think.
