Personna 74 packaging

Now that this auction is over I can link to it. Does it seem strange to anyone else that while the pack itself says "Personna 74 Tungsten Plus Blades" the packaging says "Super Platinum Chrome Blades". Makes me kind of wonder if they are really NIB. Looks like he has more for sale now...

Not strange at all. I have some with the exact packaging, in fact I have other 74s with even yet different packaging. Personna, like every other blade manufacturer, changed packaging seemingly every year-- with the 74 Plus, anyway.

Those blades are 74s, no question.

Thanks, I guess that's just me being paranoid. Seems strange that Personna wouldn't market the Tungsten steel on the actual packaging though.

Well, the reality is that they didn't in a few cases. Doesn't make sense to me either, but at the time those blades were on the market cartridges were becoming all the rage.

That outer package is the next one that came along after the Personna 74 (when they started their slow decline after the management buyout from Phillip Morris). I have some DE packs with that same outer packaging and a different blade pack inside(not Personna 74, but silver with red Personna lettering).

These are transitory packages were created while they were using up the blade holders that said Personna 74. The blades inside may or may not be Personna 74. I think they probably are.

Another vendor has also had transitory injector blade packs for sale recently. They have the similar outer packaging, but the inner blade packs are metal with black plastic embossed Personna 74.

The next generation blades are described on the back of the package. They still contain at least some of the tungsten of the Personna 74. The titanium coating is gone, however, replaced by platinum......

I have some of those. I also have some 74s in different packaging, with no mention of them being 74s at all. They shave the same.

Which store? The one on Willow Pass? Next time I visit my Mom, I'll have to stop in and pick some up.

Bay Books? Great place. I'll have to get some blades and give them a shot.

I won those blades. I've won a few different lots of Personna 74's recently and so far I've seen three different packaging types. All excellent blades.

I picked these up for $1.50. Kinda looking forward to trying them next time I dust off a de razor.

I got 10 comfortable shaves out of the first and only Personna 74 I've used so far. I could have probably stretched it a few shaves more but I was happy with 10. I think I've got around 70 Personna 74 blades at home now which means that's a couple of years worth of very comfortable shaves.

OK gents, I 'm going to do something I don't usually do--and that is, tip my hand. As I have so many Personna 74s, and will never run out (lifetime supply), I'd like to clue you in to another variant of P74 packaging. I think that toward the end of the P74s life, ASR had a bunch on hand, but for marketing reasons needed a product with a new label. New is better, after all. So they released a "new" blade, but really, it was the same old blade.

I present to you the Personna Super Platinum Chrome, AKA the Sleeper 74. P74 in a nondescript package. What possessed ASR to do this is anyone's guess. But they did it--I have 150 of them, in 5's and 10's.

Anyway, that is my theory. If you see these blades anywhere, BUY THEM. They are likely P74 plus. I say likely, because ASR may have put other blades in these packages as well. But keep in mind that the Plat Chromes of the time were exceptional, so even then you can't go wrong.

Good luck in your search!

I thought I was the only one that knew about this...

I also have a large quantity of Personna blades that are that off-gray color of the Tungsten blades. They aren't marked Personna74, but are from the early-70's, and having used them, I'm certain that they're the same blades.

Vintage Personna's good great.

Cool, I have seen these before but was never inclined to buy them. I recently scored 300 English Gillette Platinums on eBay, so I have sworn off new purchases for the rest of the year. Hopefully by the time I'm in the market again, this post will have been long forgotten :wink2:.
