Penhaligon's English Fern

I know this has been brought up before and I know this appears in bits and pieces throughout the cologne forum but I recently (finally) got my hands on a small bottle (mini) of the English Fern and I'm loving it!

So my questions are this what do you think of this scent?

Is there another Fern scent that you prefer, if so, why?

I've had the soap for some time but have been waiting for the delivery of the EDT. So far both my Mrs. and I are loving it.

Thoughts?

I like this scent. It is very similar to Trumpers Wild Fern. The only other fern that I like is Pecksniffs Fougere. It's different than Pens but in a good way.

It's one of my favorites. It doesn't go on that well for me but the dry down is very nice to me.

Would you give any of them a leg up on the others?

I don't have any issues with the application/first scent but the dry down is in fact amazing. This will probably be the next large bottle I purchase.

I would give Pens a leg up over Trumpers. Pecksniffs is a different scent in the same catagory. I ran out of Pecks about 2 years ago and it's on my list of acquisitions.

I think I read somewhere that Jim sees it the other way. That's why I asked. I may get around to trying the GFT but I really do like the Pens. Thanks!

Crown Fougere is another virtual dead ringer for English Fern and Wild Fern. They're all great, but I give the (slight) nod to the Penahligon's. I may need to revisit Wild Fern, though, just to see if I still feel that way.

Thanks for the input!

I have the Pens and really like it! Was spicier than I was expecting. Haven't tried the Trumpers but I'd like to. I've read it's more "green" than the Pens.

I also prefer Pen's EF to Trumper Wild Fern (WF). I believe that EF is a more complex fragrance than WF. The last bottle of WF that I bought seemed more like after shave strength...it just didn't have much longevity on me.

I agree with both of these statements. The wood notes in the EF are replaced in the WF with something more, well, "green," for lack of a better term. It makes the WF a little smoother, a little less complex. This doesn't make it necessarily better or worse, just different. Like Lynn, though, I found the WF didn't last very long on me, whereas I get pretty good longevity out of the EF.

I prefer the Trumpers but the Pen's is great as well. I just with the WF lasted longer with more sillage. Although I think it's gone, and suddenly I will catch a whiff of it out of nowhere.

I have both the GFT and the Pen's and to tell you the truth. After 5 minutes they smell pretty much identical. I want to say that I prefer the Pen's because its suppose to because of price/cooler bottle/ better name, a ribbon, etc. My nose isn't as good as some especially the basenote guys but I did a "smell" test with my coworkers and 4 of 4 said it was the same fragrance on both wrists after ~ 1 hour. Definitely as you mention....YMMV.

They are very similar, to the extent that "for all practical purposes" they can be considered virtually identical, especially if someone is taking in the "gestalt" of the scent, rather than specifically trying to note the differences. Back when I was checking out both EF and WF, I did a toe-to-toe with both of them, and I could detect some subtle differences. I'd like to think it was an objective observation on my part, rather than influenced by factors such as price or company reputation. I distinctly noted how more wood is present in the EF. But that's with my nose less than an inch away from the spot where I applied it, and sniffing repeatedly and intently. Basically, though, I agree: they're the same scent; same goes for Crown Fougere.

I've only ever tried the Trumper's (in a sample pack), and I found it to be very agreeable indeed. The dry-down has this kind of lovely dank "forest" smell; I don't know what oakmoss smells like, but I imagine this is it? It also lasts a bit longer and is a bit more distinctive (on my skin) than most of the other Trumper's scents.

Just looked at my notes from when I sampled them both. I wrote that the Wild Fern smelled greener and had a soap like note that I didn't get from English Fern. I liked them both but none of the Trumpers colognes I've tried - including Wild Fern - last on me. Wild Fern was gone in an hour. English Fern lasts through most of the day. Given that, it's English Fern for me.

I really like the Pen's EF. An absolutely classic, high quality fougere to my nose. Lots smells a lot like it. Fougere is a classic and very common style of men's scent, but I do not think I have every had any I like as much.

I generally like Pen's frags, but was not so excited about getting the EF as I have been other Pen's. But over time I find myself using it as often more more often than any other particular Pen's. Seems like a pefect masculine scent.

And yet, ironically, Pen's sells it as a 'unisex' fragrance. I could never quite figure that out.

Very true but when they package mens scents like the mini set for him it is in there but they don't include it in the women's. I couldn't imagine my wife wearing the EF.
