Parting with Cash

I'm looking to test the straight razor waters. I was wondering what people's opinions were on how much I should look to spend on my first razor.

Thanks

How much do you want to spend?

Can pick up vintage, shave ready, straights quite cheaply - under $50 for something a little rough around the edges. That is, more or less, the route I took and I'd go that way again. In fact, it is my most expencive razor.

Good luck.

$50-100. Depending on how pretty/big/wedgy you want the razor to be. Whatever you buy, make sure it says shave ready.

I'd say there are 3 price brackets
25-35 bucks for a b/s/t razor
50-60 for a wapi
80+ for a Dovo
above that if you want something special

"Parting with cash" That's what this is all about... :001_smile

But for starting out, you should be able to get a shave-ready razor for $50 or less. As Leighton said, make sure it's shave-ready.

This is a good assessment! If you have the money now, you might want to just go for a Dovo or some other hundred dollar razor, that way if you love straight shaving (which I bet you will) you won't have to shell out the money later and have spent 50 extra on one you won't use anymore. Just a thought...

Dovo Tortoise Shell Handle Special 6/8 , mine was $114 prehoned. One and you're done.

Thats just because you are made of stronger mettle than the rest of us mere humans.

Or he's just smarter

Personally, I was able to resist the call of the DE (somehow...). The call of the straight is brutal. I keep telling myself, oh but that will clean up nicely, and maybe some day I'll sell it :001_rolle.

I would go with the BST option. Straight razor technology hasn't really advanced much in the last 100 years so $$ doesn't exactly make for a better shave. If I was forced to choose my best shaver probably cost me less than $50 but the best looking was over $200. Strange addiction isn't it?

My best shaver cost me much more than all the other razors I own. :(

You can always get the $50 razor nicer scales. Can't add blade etching.
