Parker 89R Questions.

Ok the online research phase is done and the 89R looks like a good additon to my cave, only if it passes the B&B 'Ask the Experts' test.

So for all you 89R owner's I've got 3 questions for you.

1) Your impression of the craftsmanship and design? (Please include any weight issues here it looks like this big boy is at the top of the weight scale).

2) Performance? (let me know how it performs, as well as your opinions vs other DE's you own ie: More/Less/Same aggressive than Brand X).

3) Blade pairings (I've noticed from a lot of posts that blades and razors are a lot like Wine and food pairings some work, some don't. So what blades didn't or did work with 89R).

I currently have a Merkur long handle, and Merkur HD, so this will be my first DE from Parker. (If it passes of course!). :001_smile

Thanks in advance

Regards
SCD

Okay, I have owned 2 Parkers. One was just fine and one was a piece of junk.
I have heard that Parker has improved their quality control so that things have significantly improved.

Having said that - I had never seen a Parker 89R and had to look it up.

Imagine my surprise to find it looks AMAZINGLY like a Muhle R89!!

I find that a little distasteful myself, and due to the previous problems I had with quality control on the Parkers and this new obvious attempt to make some money off of a long standing legitimate razor maker, I am now sworn off of Parker altogether.

They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery, and Muhle is certainly worthy of emulation, but in the business world, such emulation, down to the Model Number, is a sign of an unscrupulous manufacturer.

That's just my perspective - YMMV.

Thank you for your candor. Based on what you've said and the lack of response to my post, I'm going to reconsider Parkers altogether. Until now my purchases have been via amazon. Reading more posts I've discovered purchase alternative's such as West Coast. Will take a serious look at the Muhle's. Thanks

I have a Muehle R89 and it is an excellent razor.

I haven't tried the Parker 89R but I do have a Parker 98R, which I find to be an excellent razor likewise. The quality of the finish is not as good as the Muehle, but that shouldn't put you off. The thing that makes the 98R stand out is that it responds very well to different blades and is therefore a very versatile razor depending on what you put in it. It can go from being a mild razor to being a quite aggressive razor depending on your choice of blade and gives a close, comfortable shave. It's certainly one Parker that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
