PARKER 51. . . in antique store

Hi Gents: Hope all is well with you and your families. Today. . . I saw a Parker 51 in an antique store that appears to be in good condition. The asking price is $39. Is that a fair price?

If it's in decent, usable condition, then it's fair. If it's semi-trashed and is going to need a $40 or $50 restoration to get it writing again, then you might want to look elsewhere. Do you know if it's a vacuumatic or aerometric filler? Aerometrics are pretty bombproof...vacumatics usually need work. How's the nib look? Any cracks or other obvious damage?

I know that the nib is in good condition. Pardon my ignorance (blame it on my FP newbie) but what is a vacuumatic or aeromatic filling system? I'm guessing that is something like a convertor of some sorts? I did see the "convertor" but unsure if it is vacuumatic or aeromatic. From my visual inspection. . . it appears to be in good condition. Something told me that I should have taken a pic with my phone.

If you opened the pen and saw the converter it's an Aerometric. If the nib is in good usable condition that seems like a fair price.

Maybe you can dip it, try it out to make sure it's not scratchy.

Did the filler have a strap over the top ? or was it enclosed by metal and have a push bar. What color was the jewel on the end of the cap ?

It was enclosed in metal and had a push bar. The outside color of the 51 was turquoise.

Thank you gents for all your helpful responses. I am going to go back there tomorrow to see if I can score my 1st vintage FP.

Mel, an old Parker 51 in good condition is a nice score; it's an absolute classic! I had on years ago and quite liked it. Do enjoy it, my friend.

Update on the Parker 51. . . I went back there to purchase my very first vintage FP and it was gone. Unfortunately. . . it was sold.
