What's new

Paging Castlecraver.....

It's very telling that I received this today in all 3 of my email accounts.

I guess now I can get 31 instead of my usual 30? Maybe I'll set a new personal record. :tongue_sm

Nooooo!!! Not fair!! NOT FAIR!!! There isn't a WC for 12,000 miles.... :em18:

I'm gonna commish SWMBO to send me some anyway, regardless of the health hazards!!!

That is perhaps the only thing Texas lacks, White Castle. It's trendy right now for restaurants and bars around here to offer their own version of a slider, but its never the same. To most people here it is just a cute name for a small burger. How little they understand.

I can get them frozen, but its not the same that way either.

Good lord, I have replied to two threads this morning, one on doughnuts and one sliders. The cuisine of B&B.

It makes me smile when I meet someone who realizes both of these critically important points. A "slyder" is a White Castle hamburger. Period. And the frozen ones aren't even close approximation to the glory that is fresh, hand made, steam-grilled, White Castles at 2am.

Incidentally, they're about 10 times better in Indiana due to the way the onions come chopped. Here in Cleveland, all the White Castles are joint operations with Church's Chicken, and they're just not as good.

Also, anyone who utters the "K" word in this or any other White Castle-related thread better be ready for me to reach through their computer monitor and slap some sense into them.

Many cities in Texas have Krystal. Same concept. Fastfood sliders with minced onion.

I grew up in Cleveland. When I was 13, every Saturday, I'd take the bus downtown for my guitar lesson, on Euclid Avenue near 14th Street. After the lesson I'd walk across the street to have a corned beef sandwich for lunch. (Once, I saw Gorgeous George in front of that deli, and another famous wrestler who called himself Lord Layton.) Anyway, one week my mother told me that at a party she'd met a man who owned the White Castle near my lesson and that the man had told her how he'd just bought a prize steer for $5000; the implication was this man was going to turn that steer into delicious White Castles, and so I should go there after my lesson and try one. I did. It cost 19 cents and the following week I went back to corned beef sandwiches. I've thought about that $5000 steer; $5000 in 1957 was enough to buy a Cadillac.

"K" word?

I have only had the frozen ones, but lemme tell you, first time I see a White Castle in person, I am going to get a crave case, and eat myself sick.

He's referring to Krystal which I mentioned above. Personally, I don't remember enough about WC as they only had them here when I was young. What I do know, is that the WC's I had in NY were pretty similar to the ones I got more recently at a Krystal in Dallas. Sorry Castlecraver.

We had Little Tavern Shops in the D.C. area when I was growing up, which was basically a carry-out only operation which served what they called the "Famous Little Burgers." They started in 1927, but are all gone now. :frown:

I've had White Castles (when I lived in the Chicago area), and they are just fine with me. But I came of age in college eating Krystals  ("gut grenades" as we called them, but they also went by "sliders" - yeah, you heard me! :001_tt2:). You'll never convince me that WC's are better. Sorry.
