Paddle as an everyday strop?

I have a 2" double sided Dovo strop(Cloth & Leather) and I just purchased a L. Abrams Modular strop thinking I could use the leather for everyday stropping but if I need to sharpen I could get out the other paddle pads and paste to sharpen my St8 but I'm seeing posts that say no one uses a paddle strop for everyday stropping, is that true? (I kind of liked the one handed paddle way of stropping compared to hanging & stropping)

Arkwell,

I use a double sided paddle strop almost exclusively for my daily stropping needs :001_smile

Have fun !

Best regards

Russ

Just wonder how to het the best use out of a Double sided paddle strop

Which side do you use first, heavy or fine grain?
What maintenance do you use, soap, leather conditioner?

Use the heavy grain first, about 40 laps each side.

Run the palm of your hand up and down the leather a few times each time before you use it (before you grab the razor) and that should be enough maintenance for the life of the strop, really.

Paddle strops are traditionally used to sharpen straight razors by using abrasive compounds. The rigidity of the paddle strops probably helps with reducing the rounding of the edge that occurs while using abrasive compounds on flexible surfaces (hanging strops) and compressible surfaces (leather on paddle strops or bench hones). However, an unpasted paddle strop will work fine for normal stropping. The downside of using the paddle would probably be the need for more laps due to the reduced stropping length. I actually think that paddle strops maybe better for beginners to use as beginners would be less likely to nick the leather on paddle strops. Let us know what you do and how it works for you.
