What's new

P&G old spice ughhhhh

Dad has some.

I opened the bottle to smell. Just opening the lid left me smelling sickeningly sweet and not very spicy all day.

SICKENINGLY

SWEET

This stuff isn't just off from the original; it's disgusting. I remember the original being peppery and spicy. What the hell?

Ughhhhh get it off get it off get it off!

I think I read somewhere that Proctor & Gamble reformulated Old Spice and the new stuff doesn't smell as good as the old stuff.

Actually tried some of the new P&G stuff today along with their body wash ("Ladies, look at me, now look at your man....")

It's not horrible. It's lighter than I remember Old Spice and indeed, not as spicy. I feel fresh and clean, but not very "scented." For $8, it'll do on occasion.

I would like to try the again original for a comparison.

Maybe P&G will finally wise up and bring back the Shulton formula. Remember, back in the day, when Coke changed their product to the "New and Improved Cola". There was almost a rebellion and Coke got the message. Either it was clever marketing by then having two Cokes on the market, Original and Improved, or just a mistake that brought in Millions of sales.

Maybe P&G will come out with the "Original Shulton Formula" for the whole All Spice line in due time.

Tutti Frutti, Cheers!

It distracted people while they switched the original formula to HFCS, which tastes almost the same but not. So it tastes almost as good, and better than their garbage "New Coke," and people bought it.

P&G has their hands in so many things, you'd think they'd have room to consider something like developing a higher end version of Old Spice. They've got the perfect place to sell it and market it since they now own The Art of Shaving. That kind of scent is going to turn a lot of people off these days. BUT, a guy who goes into an AOS store is already sticking his toe into the wetshaver water and I'd bet IS more likely to embrace going "old school" with Old Spice while he's at it. If they market it as an "upscale" version of Old Spice-- that would suck some guys in too. C'mon guys. Pull some tricks out of the Creed playbook...cash in on the history of Old Spice. Make it EdT strength. Stick it in one of those really, really old style bottles. Or at the very least, put it back in glass. They'd suck me right in if they did that.

But the catch is, how many guys who like original Old Spice would pay a premium for a higher end version. Part of the appeal for those who love "old" Old Spice is that it was dirt cheap. At what price point do Old Spice lovers say "F 'em"- I'm not paying $XX for Old Spice!"

With the P&G stuff I'm wearing today, my sense is they're trying to lighten up the formula to appeal to the younger crowd. I think they see Unilever's Axe running away with younger guys and want a piece of that action. I see CVS has a blatant knock off of Axe packaging called "Blade."

I have an 18 year old girl telling me Axe WILL get me laid.

Every other girl I know hates Axe.

Near as I can tell the younger crowd is stupid, and if they had to stand in a room filled with 100 Axe-soaked teenagers they'd start choking on their own breath.

Already said F...em and have not bought Old Spice in close to 20 years. I buy the knock off stuff at the Dollar stores and it smells a lot better than the P&G crapola.

Cheers!

I'm not saying Axe is great stuff. But it's selling.

Well.

Well.

Axe has awesome commercials and Wonder Bread sells well. Blue Ribbon white bread too.

Have you had real bread? Go to Panera and get a fresh sourdough loaf... yeah. Then try some of that Blue Ribbon again. I can't even eat it, it's so horrible.

A lot of things sell well, even though they suck. Enough hype and culture shift and you can sell actual garbage.

I used to use the old stuff without a problem, but this new stuff sometimes gives me a headache. Anyone else?

That would be nice, wouldn't it? I think it would be great to have Original, Leather and Lime all available in classic glass bottles.

In some ways, it's exactly the opposite kind of item as Art of Shaving, which has always struck me as an odd upscale generic. It's like a meta-brand. "Art of Shaving" is a brand without any history or identity--like something that they'd use in a movie when they didn't want to pay a real company. It looks like it costs a lot and it's tastefully packaged, but the title just refers to itself (unlike Trumper's or Penhaligon's). Would you drive to their store in a car from "The Art of Driving?" Would you yearn to dine at "The Art of Eating?" The funny thing is , I think that the products themselves are so much better than the odd marketing scheme that they've adopted to sell them.

At the other end of the scale is Old Spice--an Uberbrand. It has such a powerful history that they both want to capitalize on and escape from. Some ranges that resemble the original goods are still around, like an appendix, or a vestigial tail that P&G is ashamed of. The rest is all new Axey stuff that wants to play on the name recognition of OS while distancing itself as far as possible from what it is that OS once made. This is strange too--like P&G wants to capitalize on the strength of the brand, only with people who have no interest in that strength or the products associate with it. It's odd that it works.

Exactly Nid. All very true and funny.

I think you're right on with Old Spice being stuck trying to both use, and escape from, their history. They could turn it into a huge plus if they look at Creed and get the sales clerks "spinning" it.
But it's got to be an SA in AOS, or Barney's, or one of the other stores that distirbute AOS. That apathetic clerk selling blow dryers, batteries and photo processing in CVS isn't going to sell it. The commercials for this write themselves.

AOS could well served by Old Spice. I think they could pull it off. It would be better than the scents they're pushing now and fill a gap. They ought to pay us a fee for figuring this out for them. LOL.

BTW, I've noticed my nearest AOS is starting to sell Zirh stuff. Another P&G acquisition I see. I'm hooked on some Zirh products and hope they don't screw it up.

Very well written post Nid. I agree as well with what you say. I'd love to see the old Old Spice make a return. I never got the pleasure of using it, or smelling it for what I remember.

I did buy some of what they make right now, and at first I didn't care for it. But I've been now and then putting a few sprays on for kicks, and it's been getting better. It's definitely have a fruity smell to it. I got that right away. It's been going down and getting some other stuff not quite sure what it is, but it's pretty good. But I'm all for bringing the old stuff back! Bring it on!

It's not that bad. And women tend to like it more. If you're concerned with that sort of thing. :001_wub:

I think it's a good unique scent on its own, and that certain individuals merely dislike it because it replaced the original scent. If it had been a sister Old Spice label most men would be quite satisfied with it.

I have worn old spice (P&G) for a few years now and like it. I'd read all the 'Shulton's was best' threads so went out and got some to see for myself.

I've got the P&G in a glass bottle, Shultons in a glass bottle and the Indian Shultons in a plastic bottle and they all smell of . . . Old Spice.

The differences are minimal.

I've been wearing the P&G OS for a few months now...it doesn't seem as strong as the original I remember from my Dad. However, it IS similar and most importantly Mrs Pumpkin likes it!! :001_wub:

I always thought of the Shulton variety as an "old man" smell...maybe, now I'm getting older myself, I'd appreciate it more
