Other ways to soften grains? Especially around the mouth?

The results are in: I used hot water AND Ivory soap as a pre-shave on my face.
I made sure to really get the Ivory soap under my grains. I had my beard covered in this stuff before I really washed it.
This made a HUGE difference compared to just hot water itself.
Especially on: the mustache, the soul patch, the greater Fu Manchu area, and the chin!
I know I'm re-discovering the obvious, BUT: I think a cheap and generic soap with respectable ingredients like Ivory used daily on the beard really degrades beard hair in a good way to make your shaves easy. I'll continue to share my results over the next few weeks.
I don't shower before I shave, but, I do now wash my face with hot water, Ivory soap, and use a hot towel.

+1 for hair conditioner. This really softens up my beard. I just put it on in the shower.

I don't often shave the area you're talking about though, because I wear a VanDyke.
