What's new

Opinions on a first 'nice' watch.

Its been a while since Ive been to the good old B&B, and this is my first post in this forum. Feels good to be back, though.

So I've never owned a watch that cost more than $50, and those were just fancier digital watches. I want something nice.

I have been looking around a bit when I get to department stores (when SWMBO drags me there to shop) and I found this beauty today:

Honestly the pictures don't do it justice, the way the dial reflects light is mesmerizing... to me at least. ;-)

I was pretty much instantly sold. Now, I have a 30th birthday coming up next month and Im pretty sure I can work that out as a gift. The XO says she wants to get me something nice for my 30th and all that. It's high on the price range of what I would consider, but it just felt right. I loved the dial color. I was originally looking for all black, but this just grabbed my eyes and screamed "look at me!". That isn't to say I think its overly flashy, it just looked good to me, blue being my favorite color, and that being about the perfect shade...

So clearly I'm pretty much sold already, but none the less, I want the collective's opinion. Good starter watch? Decent watch for the $? Other options I should consider? Etc...

I'd love to get more nice watches someday in the future, but I'm still at the point where there are so many gaps in the "I have at least one nice thing of this type" list that I am working through it will be a while before I make my way back around to watches again, so this needs to last me for years.

I think that looks pretty cool. Not very water resistant, I'm not sure if that might be an issue for you. I don't know who makes the movement, but I guess it is quartz, so it is probably not an issue.

If you like it I say go for it.

Japanese quartz is my understanding (dont know a specific brand).

As to water, I don't think it is an issue for me. I don't intend to wear it diving or anything, and it should be good down to about 70 feet. Worst it will need to withstand is washing my hands... (or if I forget to take it off before a shower I suppose, though I dont think that would happen).

does the band come in different colors? im not too large of a fan for solid black bands unless theyre some form of leather. do you like that style? checked out maybe stainless? have you ever thought about skeleton watches? I know there are a few out there in that price range.

It does come in silver or sort of a titanium grey color (the bezel is made of titanium in all cases), but the bezel matches the band so you cant change just the band color. I actually really like the black band myself, I've always preferred a style that is sort of "understated" to something flashier (nothing wrong with that, just not for me). So that being said, I don't think I want a stainless band. One thing I liked about this too, is the actual band style / material. Its a metal band, but not the thick links you usually see that inevitably pull out my arm hairs. This was more of a metal weave that felt amazing against my skin.

I do enjoy the look of skeleton watches. I think the next watch I get someday may be one of that style. It is particularly fitting as I am an engineer and love the guts of how things work. That being said I think I still prefer (style at least) the Skagen that I found over anything else I have seen up to this point. Thanks for the suggestions, though!

No harm done.
Cheers:)
Oh I didn't mean to imply I thought there might be. Just throwing out a compliment where one is due. I'm always amazed at the amount of nice things the members of these forums have. I don't even mean just expensive or that I'm amazed it can be afforded, I'm really just referring to the good taste and class shown on a regular basis.

Frankly, I aspire to be more like the good folks of this place. :)

Um..... It would seem that my remark "no harm done" was a bit confusing sorry sir if I had offended you in any way I do apologize. May you find the right watch for you. But trust me once you get one nice watch you will want another.

I'm a Seiko fan. They look good, are accurate, and last.

I've been wearing a late 1970's watch since the day it was purchased. (One of the early digital chronographs.) It looks and works as well today as it did when I bought it.

I've got an Arctura Kinetic on my wrist right now. Amazon lists it at $259.95. It my primary watch. As I've gotten more mature I've grown to like big numbers. I bought this one because it does not need batteries. A flywheel charges a capacitor. You can spend a few hundred dollars more than this in the Arctura series. Check them out.

This one runs $128.27 on Amazon. It's good down to 330 feet.

The Seiko's I've purchased have spent lots of time on and in the water. The sapphire crystal faces on my Seikos have never scratched or marred. I've never had any moisture issues.

Heh. No, no, not at all. I think its actually I. I was just trying to clear up what I previously meant and I think I did more harm than good in that department. I seem to do that a lot when I am not speaking face to face. My suspicion is that I rely heavily on bodily language to get my points across. Frankly I'm smiling right now at the confusion.

At any rate, I think we can safely say there was no offense caused or intended by anyone anywhere and move on. ;-)

I find Skagen's to be a good value at the 100-200 dollar price range....plus if you like the look of it, then please by all means buy it! Pretty soon you will be looking at Tag's, Omega's and Hamilton's!
This is what I am afraid of. =P

I came here to learn about wet shaving a while back (I have all the gear now, though not much in the way of duplicates). Then I got into fountain pens (I now have numerous pens, including a Lamy 2000 which is my nicest by far). Now I'm looking at watches. This place is dangerous!

That's a sharp looking watch. For about the same price, you can get into a Seiko 007 or Monster, but they're a different style of watch. If you like this one, go for it! Skagen is a great brand.
