Opinions of these boots

I want a black pair of boots, but I hate the really shiny boots that are so common. I don't know if I care for these either... This has been a 4 year search yielding no positive results (wearing a 14 isn't helping matters much)...

So, opinions please Lucchese Black Boots

You're in Texas, why not get a custom pair of boots made for you?

Because even in Texas that doubles the price :wink2:

Also, there is a lead time that I've never wanted to deal with... I know I've been looking for 4 years, but it's not like I'm in a hair on fire hurry to get a pair. It's not like I'm "bootless" :001_rolle

They look like they have a suede finish, which I think is actually pretty cool. I can't tell from the pic how the toe caps are finished, but I do like the design.

Have you looked into elephant hide boots? I have a pair of Nocona's that are about 30 years old. The elephant hide is not shiny, and it is about as tough as leather can get (i.e., it will last forever and always look good in the process).

BTW, I'm a size 13 -- 14 is on the cusp of where you may need to start thinking custom. The upside is that, although the initial outlay is great, if you buy good quality it lasts forever, saving you money in the long run.

Good luck, Paul!

I agree with you, but I'm able to find 14s pretty regularly. I like the elephant boots, but my wife doesn't care for them (grain issue). I'm not sure if I like that pointy of a toe on a boot. With a size 14, you can imagine what that might look like...

I have a pair of custom boots, and I love them. The problem is that I don't wear stuff that will go with black shoes all that often, and I'd like to avoid that kind of an expense for a pair that I won't wear a lot.

Ok, I've talked myself out of these boots already. I am into "timeless" looks, and I fear these will be too trendy.:001_smile

Lucchese boots @ one time were considered to be about as good "off the shelf" boots as were made. You might check with A. C. Russell Moccasin Co. of Berlin, WI or White Boot Co. of Spokane, WA; they are very good.

Nice boots Paul.
Have you looked into RM Williams gear?
They are out of Australia, but have distributors here in the states.
Handmade stuff, lifetime warranty, and they sell premade as well as custom stuff. The boot is made of 1 piece of leather, so no seams to leak or break, except the one in the very back.
I've owned them and can tell you that they were the most comfortable longest lasting boots I ever owned, and that is saying something in the Abrasives Handling business.
See the attached catalog, boots start on page 82 and run to page 93. Custom made info in the back.

Although we don't wear high boots (cowboy style) like that in Australia, mainly ankle length, I think that they look pretty good. They certainly have a different look to them.

Wow, thanks for the link:001_smile

I think they're kind of cool Rich. A tad unconventional. Hard to tell if they're suede or a kind of weathered finish.

As an Angeleno who might belong in Texas, I've got a few pairs of Luccheses.
I'm wondering a bit about the height. Seem like short boots, which is fine I guess.

I wear a size 13 and I find even with the pointy toe boots, they don't look toooo big. Lucchese's rock.

yeah, I'm not much of a "cowboy" so these boots will go with my designer jeans and stuff... no wranglers here:lol:

When I made partner at my law firm in Houston, one of the senior partners took us out to get cowboy boots. As an India (from India, not Native American), I was skeptical of whether I'd get any use out of them. But I got a pair of Luccese Classics in a dark brown, similar to the ones you've posted but without the pony detailng. In other words, they have plain toes.

I moved to NYC about 5 weeks later. These ropers are very comfortable and I wear them quite a bit. Under a suit or jeans, nobody can tell that they're cowboy boots.

So, yes, I strongly endorse the Luccese's.

If you go into a store that sells different brands of boots and try several on, when you slip on the high end Luccheses, it's like comparing Johnny Walker Blue to Cutty Sark.

Yeah, I'm a Lucchese guy. They are better than all the other boots I've tried.

I've heard good things about Black Jack boots... Any experience with them?

No. I had some Justins and another couple of brands I don't remember offhand.

Went into a store that sold Lucchesses once to find a new pair and when I put those on I was hooked.

The Justins I still have and they're a kind of natural color version of the black boots you're looking at. Kind of unfinished...not shiny. Steer hide I think. Thick leather.

yeah, that's why I don't wear the black boots I have. I hate shoes that bring a lot of attention to them (likely because my feet are so big), and those being real shiny are not what I want.
