Open combs!!

Well, I have been using a Bostonian for about the past week and a half. (Quick shout out to thank Jake for the awesome PIF).

I don't know if all open comb razors are like this but if they are I doubt I will use anything else again. I get such an excellent shave with this razor. I at most have to do 3 passes (and then I am BBS) but I normally can get away with 2 sometimes even 1 and have an excellent looking shave. I get very little irritation with this razor.

Before this I was using a Gillette Tech and it was just way too mild for me. I had to do at least 4 passes and even then it did not look pretty, plus I got a lot of irritation from doing 4 passes.

Are all open combs this awesome?

What are some other open combs that are comparable to the Bostonian? Any good ones being produced now you would recommend?

Thanks!

A bostonian is a very good shaver! I like them heavy... A Bull Mastiff made by Cooncatbob might be your next weapon!

Not all open comb razors are created equal. The Bostonian is typical of the Gillette New Improved line. It is an aggressive razor but there are variations. The Tuckaway with it's shorter, lighter handle will be a little less aggressive where the Big Fellow with it's longer, heavier handle more aggressive. I find the Old Type is generally less aggressive than the New Improved, with the pocket razors like the ABC and the ball handled the smoothest. The New razor line is less aggressive but fairly close to the Old Type. The New De Luxe is the smoothest. In all the Gillette open comb razors are very good shavers once you get used to them. It sounds like you've got it down pat. I can only comment on the vintage Gillette razors.
