Open Comb DE Nirvana ~

Open Comb DE Nirvana ~

Interestingly enough shaving with a SE razor led me to the best DE shaving experience yet. My Gem Open Comb Micromatic has been a fantastic razor providing me with consistently breathtaking shaves. It made me wonder, have I just been missing the boat concerning DE shaving, with my Superspeeds, Techs and Adjustables? To this point the only DE razor yielding decent shaves, as compared to my SE razors, has been the EJ 89DL.

So I couldn't help but wonder, would a vintage Gillette Open Comb provide the same sort of superior shave that the OC MM does? In a word, Yes. . . . . . Over the course of the last week I sought out a Gillette “New Standard” from a fellow B&B board member. It arrived yesterday. So this morning I loaded a new Crystal blade, whipped up some Arko lather and went to work. The shave was far better, closer, and smoother than any DE shave I’ve ever had. “Gasp”. . . . It even exceeded the shave I get from my beloved EJ 89DL.

I still think that the SE shave trumps DE shaving. But if you are looking for the best that DE has to offer, one large step closer to shaving nirvana, dump the Adjustables, TTO’s, “safety bars”. Find yourself a Gillette “Old Style”, or any one of the “New” variations. Experience what I have learned, that the best in “wet shaving”, whether it be SE, or DE, was perfected prior to World War II and it's been downhill ever since then in terms of razor technology.

I agree that everyone should have at least one open comb. They're not for everyone, though. Every now and again, I pull out the bulldog and am reminded of how great a shave I can get from it. It's not enough to get me to use open combs exclusively, but it always comes as a welcome surprise.

I recently discovered the both the great shaves a 1912 SE Gem give and the great sahve from an Conrad Open comb DE. I will go out on a limb state that the 1912 Gem SE,
is a superior razor.

OC's and injectors give me the best shaves so far.

My only DE razor is an open comb. I used for a while a really cheap DE with a plastic handle. When I knew I wanted something better, I bought a Merkur open comb and didn't look back.

I agree that the NEW is a great razor, I have both the short and long combs, and both give a great shave. OC razors just have a different feel than the safety bar.

I really do feel that the Gem / Ever Ready 1912 is the best razor. But the SE/DE open combs fall just slightly behind and provide exceptional results. If you have never tried one do yourself a favor.
