What's new

Once again, the Canadian wild is a big deception

This morning a said to myself 'Lets try one more time', it was warm outside and I had a list of antique store not far from the home. The ride took 21minutes, according to my GPS, and there was still time left where I parked the car :) is it a lucky day ? I enter in the first store and jackpot ! A lil box with about 10 crusty/brassed Razor (SS, Tech, one flair rocket), there was also a wardonia with case and a lot of vintage blades :) will my luck last ? Nop... The lady was asking 35$ per crusty razor.... I got the eternal green patina sale pitch, they sell very well... Blablabla I tried to bargain but I got the 'GTFO of my store' look. The second store was closed... I gave up and headed to the gym (where I am at the moment).

Do i'm the only one to feel insulted by Canadian amtique shop owners ? They think buyers are dumb. Or what ? No way I'll ever pay 35$ dollar for a crusty/fair condition SS, and no way they sell well at that price, B&B know the truth ಠ_ಠ

You aren't the only one. I just walk away and wish them luck.

You see the same thing in the vintage cast iron world. Sellers of pitted, warped skillets says "It's Griswold - it's collectible" and expect $40 - $50. Different store the following week there's a stack of the same, except in good condition, for $15 - $20. Patience truly is a virtue :biggrin1:

I'm from Toronto and I haven't really looked for razors at any antique stores in my area, I find many of them to contain over-priced items in general. But today, I got a Gillette 53' SS, 2 Auto Strops and 1 case for $25 at a local flea market.

Down south of you here is the same. Just yesterday I ran into this where the vendor was asking $52 for a Flare tip, black handle and a tech..each. I was frustrated too. Then at another antique store another Flare was $15. Better but not a smoking deal.

This is very true about Canadian antique shop owners. When I read of people in the U.S. picking up decent razors for $5, $10 etc I am blown away. Every shop I find razors, they want $30 for a crap condition tech or superspeed with no case. Something Ok condition with a case? They price it as if it's the only one ever made.

I try to bargain and often can get them lower but most of the time its still too high.

Nothing in my part of Canada as well. I've hunted thousands of km and a few gems were not worth the gas spent...

Hey brucered, those are some really excellent scores! Where about in Canada are you located? Did you find these razors at your local antique stores?

can't tell you, it's top secret, i don't want everyone in canada taking trips to my location and scooping all the razors in Winnipeg...Oops, i said it.

actually I don't think that's an issue as not many people would come to Winnipeg for anything, let along razors.

yes, they were all local finds, from 1 or 2 shops i visit.

It's a struggle here in Edmonton. I couldn't find a brush for restoration at a local flea market for less than $10. Razors again are badly presented with damaged, dirty or rusty examples being offered at or above the price I would expect to pay for a boxed, pristine example.

Don't people come to The Peg to enjoy the mild, balmy winters?

I said it before, a terrible event wiped out DEs from our lands. Now there is only ebay left for US canadians loll
Last time I went the Plattsburg NY, I found a group of razors (3 SS, 1 tech, 1 Injector type J and 1 Slim) 20$ for the lot.

Around my way, antique store finds are almost always user grade or below, but the prices are quite reasonable. Usually never anything to write home about. Although, just a few days ago I found a near-mint D3 Executive for $10. Same deal with a GEM 1912 a few months back. You win some, you lose some.

I'm going to hit up the flea market tomorrow, see if I can find any good razors or estate pipes... and depending on prices I might have a few good laughs. I also hear good things about the 50c hot dogs :p
