Old Type blade

Mr-Razor shows an old type razor, 1920's pocket edition, No 501-B ball-end handle. There's also what looks like a three-hole blade. Did Gillette blades from the old-type era have three holes to fit their razors?
Thanks for any history you can provide.

Those were the first blades. There were several iterations before we came to the wierd pattern that is part of the modern safety razor blade, including Gillettes purchase of a razor company that had sued him over razor blade patent infringement.

See the Mr Razor site in the razor blades section for a pictorial representation of the evolution of the blade through history.

Every Gillette razor from 1903 until the release of the New razor in 1929 had three posts and needed the three hole blade. The New razor and the new blade, like the current DE blades, were made to prevent all the other blade makers blades of the time to fit in the new razor. The New blades were designed to not only fit the new positioning bar razor but the three hole razor as well. This gave Gillette a marketing advantage to start and the 3 hole blades were discontinued.
