Old Old Spice

I found out from my mom that my grandfather wore Old Spice and my Dad really like Aqua Velva back in the day.

So I set about finding those two for my rotation. Has Old Spice change a lot? I don't remember it being scented quite like that. If it has is there a source for the original bottles that are left with the stuff.

Aqua Velva I assume is the same.

Thanks

Scott

yep.

you can remember shulton old spice, what you smelt recently is P&G made. They come up for sale occasionally, and I think you can still get them in India - not that thats much help.

My understanding is that even the India Shulton fragrances are not the same as the originals, but are closer to them than the P&G versions available in this country - but this is hearsay on my part, since I've not experienced the India versions directly. I probably souldn't even reply to this thread since the topic of the corporate swindling of our olfactory senses, in everything from aftershave to laundry detergent, never fails to make me angry. I think I'll go assume the lotus position and chant my mantra now.

So I've to got to dig deep and find some old stock from Shulton if I'm going to get any original scent. Why do they do this to us? I'm recreating some childhood memories here people. And they are messing with the plan.

Thanks for your reply.

You got it!

New Old Spice - More powdery, floral. Less Spicy.
Old Old Spice - Deeper, spicier.

I like both scents, but of course, you have to have the classic.

For us After Shave seekers, either Ebay or second hand shop for the old stuff, or score some generic knockoff from Phoenix Labs or Vi-jon, sold on dollar store shelves. Name will be something like "Ivy Club Spice" or "Spice for Men". Scent is very close to original Shulton, probably with more alcohol. As a super added bonus, it's a buck or two a bottle.

Some forum members report that New Old Spice will age to a scent closer to Old Old Spice.

As far as I can tell, if you want the cologne or talc, you gotta find old stock.

There are some good Old Spice themed soaps, notably from Mama Bear. The Indian Old Spice Shaving Cream is nice, and close to the Shulton scent.

Oh, your grandad was on to something...I've started using the stuff and I've yet to get a negative reaction, and have had some very positive ones from some women who are shocked when I tell them what it is.

I see another investigation to find the pay off coming. I love this part of wet shaving. I'll hit the antique shops. I am mainly wanting to put together a kit for my father in law. He was an old spice user, so getting old stock is a must, for me and him. I have a decent badger brush already. I just need a soap, I'll try mama bears. Or possibly a scented soap that goes with Old Spice.

If I'm not mistaken, Classic Shaving carries the Indian Old Spice. However, both the Original and Lime are out of stock, leaving just the Musk. Maybe when the Original is back in stock it could be a back-up if you can't find the Shulton.

CVS has a Old Spice knock off that smells better than P&G's Old Spice. I'll have to check out the Dollar Stores version. At least there I won't have to dress up like I do for Wal-Mart!

I am not the most passionate Old Spice fan, and I think that the smell of the currently available P&G stuff is weak and uninspiring. However, I stopped in a Family Dollar the other day to grab a box of tissue and decided to chance a bottle of their generic juice. Very nice. In fact, it's earned a spot in my AS rotation now--especially nice for a day when I don't intend to wear cologne.

Just received 2 bottles of the India Old Spice (from India, the package was classic; I wish I had enough foresight to take pictures before I opened it) on Saturday, and I agree with the quote above. Now, the India Old Spice is in plastic, not glass, so I would imagine that the formulation had to change somewhat, but it had a much more of a connection to the old Old Spice than the new Old Spice (at least, how my nose remembers it). YMMV.

So the cheap, generic, stuff smells closer to the original? Who would have thought? I wonder if they used the Original Old Spice to formulate their knock off.

Indeed they did. The V-Jonn/Phoenix Labs stuff has been around since the eighties, so it was formulated to match the old stuff.

If you have the CVS version, you have the same as the Dollar General Store version. It's a beige buoy-like bottle with nautical motifs embossed on it--ships wheel, anchor, clipper ship etc. It will say Vi-Jon in script on the bottle of the bottle. In the future get it at Dollar General though--$1.60 a bottle. Unbelievable value for the quality of the product!!

Even if P&G lets the Old Spice line languish, as long as I can get the Vi-Jon Dollar General version, I'm happy. I love that stuff. I know it's kinda goofy, but I decanted it into an old O/S bottle I found. The only bottle that stays parked on my sink. That clipper ship is timeless!

I have read that these are from the same lab--it's the same product. the Family Dollar store version just has the added virtue of being cheaper

I have used it and find it splendid in every way.
