What's new

Old newbie

I started shaving in 1957 with, in those days, a Gillette Adjustable , not a "Fatboy" yet and Blue Blades. In those 50+ years, I have used it all. Now, in my 70's, I am back to the old ways. I find it interesting on the forum the dialog on razors, blades, soap etc. I started back with a Gillette "slim", Merkur and am awaiting a "Fatboy". I am trying all the new available blades. The old saying "It's the Archer not the bow" sure holds true with shaving. The technique is far more important than what is used, within reason. I enjoy the forum . Great stuff!

Welcome to the forum and welcome back to shaving with a double edge razor. I hope your experiences this time are all good. There are a ton of great products and blades now, probably far more than were available when you started back in 1957. I hope you find some things that you really enjoy and look forward to learning something from someone who has shaved with almost everything and seen a lot of things. I didn't have my first shave until 1980 or 1981, but I think it was 81'; it certainly wasn't with a DE razor either. I can still hear my mother saying to my father "tell him not to press so hard", even though I was shaving with a Trac II. LOL. Good times.

Welcome. I also started shaving in 1962 with a slim, and a few years later, a super adjustable. Over the next 50 years I continued to use them 90% of the time, with brief ventures to whatever was being pitched on TV, and nearly wore them out. Now that I've discovered this and other forums, I've become addicted to all of the wonderful soaps and creams that are available, and have more razors than I hate to admit to. I did replace my super adjustable with one in mint condition, as it still remains one of my favorite razors. You are in for a real treat by getting back into DE shaving, and this forum is composed of a terrific bunch of guys.

welcome to B&B sir!

I'm sure a gent with your wetshaving experience could teach us a few things.

I like your comment about the archer and the bow, helps put things into perspective. plenty of us here are caught up in the 'gotta buy another razor' when really it is unnecessary and we would be better served by working on our technique - THERE, I SAID IT!!! lol

Welcome! I am a newbie also and have been treated great. I love it here. Have gotten lots of useful info and am already starting to learn the "lingo."

Welcome to B&B and welcome back to DE / Wet shaving.

Similar situation here as I started in 1957, joined the service in 1960, went away from the DE in the 70s and then "discovered" B&B 2 years ago when recovering from surgery and the rest is history.

Great group of folks and my various ADs of all things shaving show their influence and recommendations :biggrin1:

Welcome to the forum, great to have someone with your perspective adding to the collective knowledge here. When I asked my Father about DE shaving (he started shaving in the early fifties), he indicated the razors were solid but the blades were the "problem"; two good shaves was the most he expected from them. Did you have the same experience with blades when you started?

I think you're probably right about technique, although when I got my first DE at Age 54 the irritation on my face subsided a great deal. Those multi-blade razors were a roller coaster ride for me. Just about every time a new product was introduced I tried it, but after a short time any improvement seemed to level off. That, and the electric razors like my dad used really ran roughshod over my face. I think it was a combination of sensitive skin, canned shave cream that didn't do the job, and never really having been taught how to shave. I also wonder if one or two blades get the whisker, the remaining blades in a cartridge scrape the skin. When I got the DE I began to pay attention to the direction my whiskers were growing and that really helped. Now I'm a straight razor shaver. Welcome aboard! :001_smile

I too am a senior fella who is new to B&B but not to wet shaving... I welcome you to B&B just as I have been so graciously welcomed recently. I remember my first shave being with a Gillette Superspeed, Blueblade and Colgate foam in a can. Over the years going from there to Gillette slim adjustable, to Techmatic, to Atra, to Mach 3 (with electrics tried in between but not seriously). Went to a brush and soap about 40 years ago but stuck with cartridges until a couple of years ago when I discovered all the new goodies on the internet for DE shaving. Since then I have been collecting DE razors and all sorts of shaving/barber stuff. I just enjoyed my morning shave with a Gillette super adjustable and an Astra SP blade, which was far superior to the old Blueblade! Routine has become an enjoyable hobby!
