What's new

OC is a rake?

Should it feel like my new OC feels like raking on my face? I get a close shave but it feels like it is scratching or raking. Not a smooth feeling like my slant. Is this normal?

I notice opens comb as feeling different and slightly rake-like compared to safety bar razors, but I don't find it unpleasant. Which razor do you have?

I get that raking feeling if my angle is too shallow. Try using a steeper angle and it should be smoother.

No sir, I don't believe that is a normal sensation when using an Open Comb razor. Possibly a malformed comb, or very small burrs on the teeth. Take a magnifying glass and check out the teeth. Also you could be applying too much pressure while making your strokes. Zero pressure is the norm. And it might also be you are using an incorrect blade/razor angle. Have you been wet shaving long? Maybe you should practice your technique a litte more with a solid guard bar razor before you dive into OC's. No offence intended. Check this stuff out, and please post again. Have a good day.

I've been DE wet shaving since July. I agree that I might be applying just a hair too much pressure. I really have to watch it more so than with my Slant. But I do wonder if my OC might have some burrs.

Put the top of the razor on your face. Slowly rotate toward the blade until you can just feel the blade on your face. This is a good starting point to work from. If you are raking, you have the comb on your face and not the blade. A safety bar razor works the same way, but the full bar acts like the blade and does a clean sweep on your face. Once you get the right angle, the shave will be more comfortable and probably closer.

I noticed this with my OC at first. I don't feel it any more. Maybe it's down to getting the angle and pressure right, but I suspect a lot of it is just getting used to something new.

So should my stroke take all the lather with the pass or should it leave a "rake-like" trail? With my safety bar razors, there is no trail.
