NYC Hotels

Going to NYC March 9th to the 14th as daughter is in a national moot court competition (Wagner Labor and Employment Law) at NYU. I have stayed at the Wellington and the room was nice, clean, but very small. Now, I dont need king's quarters since we spend little time in the room other than sleeping, but I would like something to relax in. A Day's Hotel was nice enough on 8th, but the window units got too loud, so that is out.

Found these:

found Hampton Inns Times North for $169 a night.
Belvedere for $111
Millinium for $184
The Moderne for $153

there is a special on the times 41 or something like that
wellington was like $159 a night
and there was an amsterdam hotel. all were 3 stars or better, so it was at
least equal to wellington. wellington had higher guest satisfaction rating then a few of them they said park central helmsley was not available but another helmsley hotel was new york helmsley near the chysler building for $137 a night.

Any ideas or comments?

The Novatel by Times Square is modern, simple rooms, big bar, fun due to large number of foreign tourists. The Roger Smith on 47th and Lexington is old-fashioned, slightly cramped, but with an excellent little bar (like EH I love good bars and good bars should be loved). Either are less than $200 per night.

In years past, my wife and I have put family members up in the Cosmopolitan Hotel in TriBeCa. Not sure how it compares to other affordable hotels, but the neighborhood is great (it's a very walkable area adjacent to a major subway stop) and the prices were reasonable in the past.

Of course, it's not so close to NYU...so that may not work out as well for you.

If you want to feel like you're in New York, stay the hell away from Times Square. Nowadays, it's only tourist traps and chain restaurants.

One of my favorites is The Salisbury on W 57th almost directly across from Carnegie Hall. A real value and one of the best locations in Mid Town Manhattan IMO. I have stayed at the Wellington as well. Always wanted to stay at the Carlyle and especially when Bobby Short used to perform there but never made it. (Mr. Short passed away in 2005)

One of the best values for hotels in NY is actually at the YMCA. I can't remember what the rates are, but I think not much more than a hundred bucks or so for the higher end rooms (based on a cursory look, I think you'd want one).

Location on Columbus Circle can't be beat, nor can the facilities if you're the gym-going type. Never stayed there but IMHO it's got the best pool in town.

I have stayed here in the past.

Yes, it is not really a hotel, but it is the best deal in the city for a bed. Check out the rates. And I like the experience of using those places so much that I am on the board for our local council of the organization.

Rates during summer were in the 150 range, but let me tell you, the room itself was nice, clean, big comfy beds and the view was AMAZING!

Edit: Oh and the concierge was really helpful, just don't take there recommendations for food. If you want amazing pizza, look up Luzzo's and get the traditional margherita type pizza and John's Pizza. Two of the best pizza's I ever had in my life.

Why don't you try to Priceline something? There are good deals around right now. Not sure of NYC rates but they are definitely lower than years past. 2 years ago you couldn't touch a rack rate for less than $350 a night.

I just won a 4 Star bid in San Francisco for $70 / night. Wound up being the Nikko in Union Square.

Just take a look at the "buy it now" rates for NYC hotels and start your bid for similar star levels at 50% of that rate less $5. That's what I do. If you lose your bid you can always re-bid in 24 hours anyway.

My travel agent said the Belvedere was a decent hotel. I saw the pics and the room looks nice, very nice beds. Kinda like staying in an Embassy Suites, it is at 8th and 48th, so the traffic will not be as bad. Said it had comfort controls in the room so it could have central air. Anyway, we will be gone a whole bunch, as daughter is in a national moot court competition. $640 with taxes for 5 nights was not bad.

Well waited too long on the Belvedere, which would have been like $650 for 5 nights. Went ahead and grabbed the Helmsley New York on 42nd Street for $792 or $158 a night, taxes included. I guess a short subway ride from NYU or SOHO. I can keep looking through hotels.com

I always worry about priceline. I know how some say they can game it to narrow the blind stab at the hotel, but I doubt I will get something comprable to what I have for something more than 25% cheaper. Now saving a couple hundred over the price I have in hand is worth it for the same type of room. I may check out orbitz.

I think that's a better location than the Belvedere. You can easily get anywhere you want to go from there. It's also a short walk to Pasteur Pharmacy on 34th St., steps away from the Art of Shaving store in Grand Central Station, and a quick subway ride to Cambridge Chemists and Pasteur's uptown location.
