numbered blade sides?

as i was loading my first blade (gillette 7 o clock or somehting like that) i noticed that the sides were numbered. 1 on the left and 2 on the right. flip it and 3 on the left and 4 on the right. what does that mean? the blades cant be flipped can they?

The numbers don't mean anything. Other blades have numbers as well. It's part of the manufacturing process only. I generally flip my blades over after two shaves if I remember.

oh so flipping does bring back a semi fresh edge?

When one uses a blade after a bit the edge gets "curved" it develops "waves". Blade edges are very delicate and the very edge is pretty much microscopic in its thinness. That's why straight razor folks strop their razors. Stropping does not sharpen a blade, it straightens out the edge. Lots of guys, including me, will hand strop a DE blade. I also flip the blade over to get more even wear. I suspect that flipping is not particularly useful, but hand stropping can be.

As an aside, lots of guys will "cork" Feather blades to ensure that the edges are straight. Feathers are among the thinnest (possibly the thinnest) blades out there, and so they are more prone to becoming "wavy" or being wavy out of the box. Flipping a blade is more or less the same idea stropping or corking, but I can tell you that corking works very very well, and if I were to do anything I would certainly cork. But it costs no effort to flip a blade and when I remember to do it, I generally will.

thanks Luc. i did a search for numbered corners and numbered blades but there were only like 72 pages to go through haha.

I believe that those numbers are a way for the piece work workers to keep track of how many blades they've made and put together for that day.:jump:
