What's new

Noteable Gillette DE Razors.

What Gillette DE should I get next, the reason I'm thinking Gillette is because they have earnt all their hype and I am in love my with '59 FatBoy.

I currently have: '11 Muhle R41/ '13 Muhle R41 (Grande)/ Merkur 34c (HD)/ Merkur Progress (Short Handle)/ Joris (Wood Handle) & (as mentioned above) my favorite '59 Gillette FatBoy.
The only razor in my collection that I (remotely) dislike is the Progress.

I was thinking maybe a Redtip is the next logical purchase?

In terms of my RAD I believe that resistance is futile!

Thank you B&B, you guys have helped me out on many of my recent purchases and all have been very well advised & enjoyed!
Thank you again :)

Get an OC. If you want to spoil yourself, go with an Aristocrat from the 1930s. If you want to spend less, a NEW works well.

What Gillette models are OC? Senators?

If you have a few hours to kill (and the will-power to not spend all your money on razors after reading this page), you shoudl check out Mr Razor's webpage.

HERE

I think the top 3 links are most of the Gillette OCs, however there is another link for the one-piece (TTO) OCs... and then there's the Aristocrats on the "one-piece solid bar" link.... man alive those Aristocrats are stunning!

My vote would be to get a Flare Tip of sorts (standard, red, blue, black handled etc) or if you wanted to go big then have a look at an Aristocrat.

My suggestion would be a 40's style Super Speed. You have the Fat Boy which of course you know could replicate the Red Tip at any time. My 40's style 1953 Super Speed has fast become my most favored razor. And I own a Fatboy, a Slim, a standard flare tip SS and a Merkur Classic.

The 40's style SS's are readily available on Etsy, the Bay and of course here relatively cheap and clean up very nicely. Anyway, that is my humble suggestion. Of course, you could go for the Red Tip and the 40's style!

Thanks for the link but a super speed sounds tasty :p

Thanks for the advice so far, Gents!

I'll second the 40s style Super Speed. If you enjoy the FatBoy, then the Super Speed will feel like you hopped into a sports car. Enjoy the ride!!

Of all the razors I have; R89, R41 (2013), Fat Boy, Slim, Aristocrat, Old Type, New LC, Superspeed andMerkur 25C, my absolute favorite above all others is the New LC. Medium in aggressiveness, less than my 2013 R41, smooth and efficient. So far, nothing has shaved my neck so well and with so little cleanup compared to all of the other razors I have. My neck is my problem area. And the New LC can be had for a song. I bought a completely replated New from Krona Kruiser for less than $40. I see him selling just heads often for $25 or so.

That's my vote. There is something special about open combs and the New is in a league all by itself, IMO.

Add another vote for the NEW. The 40's super speeds are great razors, don't get me wrong. But since getting my long comb New, I haven't wanted to shave with anything else.

With a sharp blade like a Feather I find it very rewarding.

Agreed. Fantastic combo and perhaps second only to a PolSilver SI. Feathers and PolSilvers are my most favorite blades.

Still waiting on some guy in Turkey to send me my Perma Sharps that I bought from him two weeks ago !

Sorry to hijack briefly, but do you really find the Polisilver SI's that sharp and smooth? I took a chance and ordered 200 of them for $50 on the BST. They are coming from Bulgaria, so I have no idea how long they will take to get here. Also, are the Perma Sharps supposed to be a good blade? I have always thought of them as sort of a 2nd tier blade in terms of quality and performance.

Back to the super speed talk. I wasn't overly impressed with my 60's flair tip super speed. Too light and short for my taste. However, I have never shaved with a 40's style, which look longer and I assume heavier.

Another vote for Super Speeds ... iconic razor. Everybody needs to have at least one 40's style and a flare tip in the mix.

Get both a 40's-style SS and NEW LC! I like them both, but these days I never use any of my SS razors. Too mild for me.

As for Polsilver SI blades, I find them to be VERY sharp and smooth - the equal of any blade I have ever tried.

Jeff, Great questions. As to my answers, there is of course the caveat that what works for me may not work for others. About the PolSilvers, yes I find them to be one of the best blades that I have tried to date. Why? Specifically for me they are sharp (not like Feather sharp) and they work consistently in every razor that I own. They last at least 5 shaves for me personally and they are very smooth and forgiving. Like you, I ordered in bulk and I must say that I do not think you will be disappointed.

Perma-Sharps are another blade that I give an excellent rating for consistency and sharpness. Again, not Feather sharp mind you but like the PolSilvers, the Perma Sharps give me a smooth shave with more longevity than other blades. Check out Squires Blade review where he reviews the blades that he tested and viewed under a microscope showing the different edges that are offered.

Squires findings are subjective of course but I find the close-up microscopic views of each blade very interesting. If you get your PolSilver SI's and you don't like them, send me a PM and we can work something out.

Hope this helps,

Frank

Thanks for the info Frank...exactly what I was looking for. I am heading to read the other thread you pointed me to and may try some of those blades as well. If for some reason I dislike the PSI, you will be my first PM.

Back to the razor talk gents. Good luck to the OP on finding the next Gillette in your collection.

An English Red Rocket, if your lucky enough to get your hands on one. It's my favorite over my Fatboy, Slim, Aristocrat Jr., Red Tip, and even my #21. No opinion or recommendation on OC's as they're not my cup-a-tea.
