What's new

Not to re-kick the badger v boar thing again.. but, a legit question...

So I got my first boar brush yesterday. Today it worked well in my soap bowl. A nice thick lather.

I think what you all mean by "backbone" is that its "stiffer" than badger? My badger is nice and soft.

I was wondering is one brush type (boar v badger) better with cream vs soap... is one better for face lathering vs bowl lathering?

I know I know... try all the combos and see what works for me. I will :) So far the boar in a bowl worked well. It think the stiffer bristles made a thicker lather.

Tomorrow I will try it face lathering with Proraso cream.

1. Yes.
2. Some people like boars for soaps because of the backbone and they're generally easier to load up since some badgers are too floppy, but you have to keep an eye on the water content more.
3. Some folks really like face lathering with boars...I like soft badgery clouds fluffing up my face.

4. YMMV

Typically, boar knots are not as dense as badgers. Boar hair is stiffer than badger.

It would be safe to say that a knot made of boar can be as stiff as a badger using less hair and longer hair.

There are plenty of other variables though. Since badger knots are usually denser, and set at a shorter loft than boar, they can work equally as well on soaps or creams, face or bowl lathering.

What sort of boar are you using and what sort of badger?

The Badger is my trusty Edwin Jagger that I have been using for years and years. The Boar is an Omega (i think its a 50). Sorry, I bought the boar used. It was listed as a 48 but all the pics i see of 48s are chrome. This one has a black handle. It could be a 48 model... Sorry, I am just not sure. Would a pic help? (I guess that may not matter huh).

If it looks like a 48 but it's black, good bet is that it is a 49. The 49's come in white, black, and red. Decent brush for sure but a better boar for face lathering would be a Semogue 1460, which also works well lathering in a bowl/scuttle. I face lather with my 1460 all the time with both soaps and creams.
