Impact thrift store may be my new place to search...

I used to use something like that as my coffee cup when I was in the Navy. While everyone else had the same cup sitting at their desk that they stole from the mess hall, I was unique, and no one ever mistook my coffee for their's and drank it by mistake.

So how do you plan to use it? Are you going to use it as a lather bowl? Or put the soap puck inside and use it that way?

If that thing is microwaveable, you might be able to warm it up and do the scuttle thing even though it doesn't have a double wall. Or ... put it in the freezer to make some ice-cold lather for the Dog Days of Summer that are coming up shortly.

I had something similar (sans the lid). Worked well, except that the inward slope of the sides meant my brush clanged on it pretty constantly, which was a pain at 6a.m.

Cool! Great find, and you are right, thrift stores/goodwills are a great place to pick up odd bowls and cups for cheap.

Unfortunately most ceramic bowls not specifically made for food or drink have lead and metal flecks in the glazing. This bowl and a microwave could cost you the price of a new microwave and ruin the cup if you attempt to microwave it. This looks specifically made for shaving soap due to its size and design (as far as I can tell from the picture, anyway). I say approach microwaving this cup with caution or not microwave it at all. Also, don't use it for food or drink because of the possibility of lead in the glaze (paint).

Good point ... I hadn't thought of that.

I hope the OP reads your comment before he tries my microwave suggestion.

That bowl was specifically made for serving soup. Look for the makers mark on the bottom; likely McCoy. Safe to heat for food...or lather. :wink2:

They can be found on the bay for cheap money. Search for "soup bowl lid" or "soup bowl handle". The better ones were made by Hall China. No crazing/cracks in their glaze because of a proprietary manufacturing process.

an ecellent find!

To do it over again I would have gone to Goodwill, Salvation Army, and antique stores looking for any old mug instead of specifically looking for shaving mugs at those places and on eBay. Doing so would have saved me a ton of money and I probably could have put together a matching set of stackable soap mugs.
