Normal cleaning of your razor

DE razors pick up a lot of gunk in a short time. Rinsing in hot water doesn't do much for them. What is the preferred method of cleaning on a regular basis that will work but not damage the razor?

I have heard of rubbing alcohol, which I have used and it works. I have also heard of using Barbicide, but I haven't tried it.

Are these the best methods, or is there another way that I haven't heard of yet?

I typically just use a hand towel and water....maybe a Q-Tip. All the gunk on there is typically leftover soap, so I figure that will help clean it enough.

Before I put a new blade in I scrub every thing down with an old toothbrush and really hot water. My razor always looks like it is brand new.

Well I'm certainly no DE expert as I've only been on the wagon for a year now but I'm just carefully toweling off the razor after the shave. I wipe the soap off the head and the underside of the head watching the blades, and then wipe the handle and set her back on the shelf. When I change blades I'll wipe the head more completely. It seems to be working well.

Once in a while I'll take a brush and scrub the nooks.

I just got my first comb style razor so I may have to adjust.

I also do the Scrubbing Bubbles. The stuff gets in all the nooks and crannies. A quick spray, let sit for a minute then rinse under warm running water then shake out the excess water and pat or gently wipe dry. After so many shaves
or a blade change, I'll disassemble the razor ( if its a 3 piece like an EJ87) or pop off the cap on the Futur, remove the blade and spray it down, then gently massage it with a small soft brush, rinse and dry. It sounds like a bit much but I enjoy using a clean razor. And they all stay in tip-top condition. Plus Scrubbing Bubbles has an anti bacterial in it.

Whenever I change blades, I scrub it with an old toothbrush and soap. Gets the razor pretty clean, though I give them a boil every six months or so for a deep cleaning.

I use scrubbing bubbles on mine between blade changes but sometimes I use soap and a soft toothbrush. Every once in awhile especially if I've gotten lazy I'll use a little CLR and a tooth brush, my water is so hard that only a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick can break it.

If I'm changing blades but not the razor, a squirt or Purell on an old toothbrush and a quick scrub. If I'm changing razors, an overnight bath in Barbicide, rinse in water, dry and put away until it's turn comes up again.

Dude, are you my neighbor? Our water is so hard that you need to take a hacksaw into the shower.

I give everything a good rinse when I'm done for the day, and an extra cloth-scrub when I change the blade. About once a month I spray the open/disassembled razor with CLR bathroom cleaner and let it sit for a few minutes. Good hot rinse and dry on a towel and the razor looks like new.

Between shaves, there's not much hope for me to keep the hard water spots or soap scum off, so I don't worry about it.

Ditto. However, I usually use a brush on the comb and grooves (if any - depends on type of razor) after every use or two. I always dry parts with a tissue before re-assembling and putting away. Takes less than 30 seconds. I haven't seen any buildup of deposits at all.

I give my razor a really good rinse, and pat dry with a towel after each shave; and scrub with a toothbrush and scrubbing bubbles when I change blades.

I had to let having a spotless razor go. When I go somewhere with soft water it's almost a treat.

I do a daily clean with hot water and a toothbrush, then dry it off with the towel. When I change the blade I do a more thorough cleaning to keep them gleaming!

I let the razor head soak in rubbing alcohol after I'm done shaving for about a minute while I rinse the brush.
Otherwise, I wash with simply green and an old toothbrush whenever I switch razors (not blades) about every 1-2 weeks.

I'm very new to DE shaving, but my husband has been at it for a while. After shaving he always dips the razor in rubbing alcohol and stands it up on the counter till it's completely dry. And when a razor needs some deep cleaning, he uses Scrubbing Bubbles. It works great, even on new purchases that haven't been well cared for. Hope this helps!
