What's new

Noob says " Hi "

Hi group,
Thought I'd jump in here and introduce myself. My friends call me Woody. There's a story there, but I'll save it for another time. My log in name is KF4TQJ. I use that because it's unique and no one else is using it. It's also my call sign issued by the FCC as I'm an Amateur Radio Operator.
A few weeks ago, I decided I wasn't getting as close of a shave as I used to from my old Norelco. Darn thing's only about 15 years old but I don't think it's holding a charge like it did when it was new and it's just getting slower and slower. Figured I'd look at a new one on my weekly trip to town. I didn't see anything that I wanted to spend $50 - $60 on so I thought I'd pick up a pack of disposables to bide my time with while looking for a good reasonable electric one. I never in my life thought I'd get sticker shock looking at disposable razors. When did they go up to $17.95 for a pack of 5? Then I noticed a pack on Persona double edge blades for $1.89. Now that's more like it. They didn't have a razor though. My old man shaved with one of those, and I learned with one back in the 60's. I found a cheap Chinese copy of an old Gillette on eBay and I was off to the races. Didn''t even see blood the first week . . .until this morning. Guess I got careless, but it's good to know that stick deodorant still stems the flow.
A bit about my shaving history. After a few years of cussing a double edge I bought my first electric. Never did get a good shave with that thing. It was a Sunbeam with a beard trimmer on the side of it. It looked like a Phazer from the original Star-Trek TV series. Very futuristic. Then during a short stint in the Navy I used a new invention. New at the time. The Bic disposable. The bloodiest shave imaginable, but close enough for inspection. Later in life I bought a Remington. Similar to the Sunbeam, but no beard trimmer. More compact, cordless and same lousy shave. Used it for a few years. Then I bought a Norelco. Probably the best electric razor on the market.
There was a touch of nostalgia in going back to a DE razor. I thought I'd look on line for a refresher if there was such a thing. Holy Cow BatMan! I couldn't believe all the things on the web on shaving! There's even one on Zen and the art of double edge shaving. I think that's where I found this site and all of you fine people.
Thanks a lot. Now I've got something else to collect. Along with Kerosene lamps and Ham radio gear. Now I'm hunting for a Gillette Super Speed 1954 model because that's what model I am. I believe that would be a Z3 and a few weeks ago I wouldn't have had a clue that I even needed one of those, let alone what it was. Thanks again.
All The Best,
Woody

Welcome to the good ship B&B. Take a stroll on the promenade deck and enjoy the voyage. :thumbup1:

Many of us seem to have a collection bug on this site.

Mine: Music (LPs - Tapes - CDs - Digital)
Old Radios (Transistors primarily - I like to repair but I never had enough time to enter into HAM activites)
Now razors: Maybe 10

Enjoy yourself and always remember, relax but be vigilant when you shave!

Thanks for the greeting. Something about your post made me think that you need a good old Zenith Trans Oceanic. Wouldn't mind having one myself.
Thanks,
Woody

Those little babies TOs have become quite expensive. I've got an "Inter Oceanic" which is a step down but still a mighty fine radio.

BTW, my allegiance is to Zeniths (US made units) and GEs (Primarly the P865 and P780 series) then the Radio Shack TRF 12-655 and DX 160.

Enjoy and take a look around. Our interest are varied!

Dude,

The journey is long. We will get it right. I precede you by one year, but do not care for a birth year razor. My favorite DE is a 1946-47 model. My favorite straight is not dated, but looks like 1930s vintage.

We are all learning. My two comments to new members (experienced or not), is to learn to make great lather, and to experiment with blade angle until you get it right for you. There are lots of great threads and stickies in the Newbies forum, and in the Wiki. Enjoy.

After a few weeks of DE or straight shaving, you will see a real difference in your skin. I'm not sayin' that bleeding is good. I'm saying that good shaving makes for good-looking skin.

Hey OM, welcome. Wet shaving is a fraternity sort of like amateur radio. B&B is a comfortable place to hang out, and there are lots of Elmers to answer questions. 73 kg0mz

Also: Looking at your location on QRZ I notice you are not very far away. I have been to the flea market several times.
