Non traditional holiday fare?

I know most will go with the Spiral Ham, or Roast. Here in the NY Italian is popular. In my house on Christmas eve we do Sauerbraten, Red cabbage and Spaetzle and Kartoffel Klöße. Any other different meals being planned?

My wife is Filipino so I can always count on some Filipino dishes mixed in with the more traditional stuff...we usually pass on the ham and get the whole pig on a platter with an apple in its mouth.

No one in my family likes turkey or whole ham much. We always have beef wellington, salt crust beef, or lamb chops with rosemary and a white wine sauce instead. We figure if its the holidays you should get all fancy. It was a really nice change when we decided this and I actually started to look forward to the thanksgiving and xmas meals.

This may not totally meet your criteria, but every couple of years we get the whole Cajun turkey from Popeye's. It's precooked, just have to thaw and heat it up in the oven till it's hot in the center.

I'll suggest it's non-traditional because every time I tell somebody about it, they look at me ****-eyed. But it's by far my favorite turkey. It's always perfectly cooked and moist, and the seasoning is delicious. It's great stuff and I look forward to it.

I'm separated from my family for a few months, but when they get to where I'm at, I've got a frozen Cajun turkey waiting in the freezer for them. :)

One of the Turkeys we had this year for Thanksgiving was Cajun...no from Popeyes though...William Sonoma I think...the thing was awsome...it was like a turkey hot link...loved it!

My parents always hosted single GI's when they were still in the military for Christmas Eve. The food usually varied depending on what was available and to somewhat enjoy some of the traditions hat the different soldiers might enjoy. This tradition evolved into theme Christmas Eve parties when Dad retired. So one year would be Mexican, the Next Thai or traditional New England etc. My brother and I have carried on the tradition of the Christmas Eve party for singles and those without any real family to visit.

Christmas day is very traditional though except that I come from a mixed family of Christian and Jewish faiths so we often have lakes with the turkey.

An old family tradition. We have ham loaf, think meatloaf, but made with ham. Its served with whipped cream made with horseradish (no sugar). I can't wait.

Do you do your ham loaf with eggs in the middle? If not, give it a try. Hard Boil three eggs, and remove the shells. Fill loaf pan 1/3 with ham loaf. Lay eggs down middle of loaf. Surround and cover eggs with remaining ham loaf. Looks just like a normal ham loaf, but when you slice it, each slice has a slice of egg in the middle. Yummy.

We normally do the spiral ham or turkey thing as well, but this year we decided on mom's Lasagna from scratch.

We've got a persimmon tree out the back so we have steamed persimmon pudding after Christmas dinner. Not too unusual, but I try to find a nice fat capon for us. Brine it just as you would a turkey. Tasty.

We're not going very traditional this year:

Spicy Butternut Squash Meatloaf
Roasted Carrosts & Potatoes w/dill
green salad
cheese tray
some sort of dessert.

I fried tilapia fish and onion rings and that was really good so I think I'm going to go with an encore. The tilapia I get is seasoned with parmesan. It's crisp, it's light, and very satisfying.

My parents grew up in small villages in Greece and it seems they always have a whole pig. So pretty much every Christmas there is a whole pig roasting outside.

Looks kinda funny to see a pig roasting on coals with snow falling all around it. But Christmas and Easter are always my favorite meals cuz of the amazing food.

You hit it, that was Grandma's tradition. She had the meat counter at Reisbecks grind it up special for her because they didn't stock ground ham gotta love small towns. We would have that for dinner and then head off to church Christmas Eve.

I don't have any family in the immediate area, and besides, I'm Jewish.

For the last several years, I've been content with the Jewish tradition on Xmas of going out for Chinese food and seeing a movie.

I'll be headed out for a bowl of Pho (Vietnamese soup) and will watch the premiere of Gulliver's Travels in 3D.
