Nib or Pen?

I have a Pelikan M800 with an OB nib I'm almost used to - I still occasionally start a letter at the wrong angle and get absolutely nothing, but only a couple of times a page.

I'm trying to wait as long as possible, but am thinking about my next pen. I would like an M nib, but the Pelikan replacement nib is in the neighborhood of $250 - and I don't think I'm the kind of person that would constantly change the nib back and forth. So that's the first question:

New nib or new pen?

I'm leaning towards a new pen. I've been looking at the M600, which isn't all that much more than a new nib for the M800. I think the size of the 600 would be fine as I have a considerably smaller Parker, but I'm surprised at how much smaller the M600 nib is compared to mine.

Is that just to balance the pen?

Could anyone with experience on both pens compare the two?

Many thanks,
Ketih

If you are open to suggestions a TWSBI 700 Vac. Super nice writer with a fine nib, large ink capacity. It is heavy very well balanced and comfortable to write with.

No. I'm open to suggestions.

Great. You could score one or two wonderful pens for the price of an M800 nib, although the aforementioned pens won't necessarily be piston fillers.

I'd also recommend the Lamy 2000. I don't normally like metal grip sections, but I love this pen. Just be aware that their fine nib approaches most other western pen makers' medium nibs.

Maybe check out the offerings from Edison and Franklin-Christoph. The F-C specialty nibs are great. Mike Masuyama grinds them, and I highly recommend their italic and stub nibs. The italics are nice and crisp, and the stubs are very user friendly (great in a daily writer). The F-C Model 03 should be released anytime now, too. I have a F-C Model 02 with a medium nib, and it's easily one of my favorite pens. That nib is perfect for me. It provides a little feedback, and it's on the fine side for a "medium."

I'm a huge fan of the Pilot VP, as well, but it has a rather small ink capacity, which may or may not bother you. If you're writing a lot, the VP may not be a great choice. It's perfect for short notes and lists at work, though. I always have one inked and with me at work.

There are so many choices! You might want to consider a Sailor 1911, or a Pelikan M400 (only slightly smaller than the M600). The Platinum 3776 might be a choice as well.

Again, if the OB nib is not for you, I am sure you can sell it on one of the pen forums, or maybe even here.

Good luck!

A Pilot CH92 would be my choice... great deals can be had from the japanese sellers on ebay and its a lot of pen for the money

Consider a Sailor Naginata togi ... can be had on eBay for about that price, direct from Japan, as a BIN ... patience can get them lower on auction items.

How could I have forgotten that one?!?! Wonderful nibs. Just be aware that they run really broad. My M-F NT nib writes like a medium or broad. It writes a M vertical line and a B or BB horizontal line. My NT is in a Sailor Professional Gear, and it cost me just shy of $200 (brand new) from a Japanese seller on ebay.

This is a fun thread. It's turned into a list of brilliant pens.

Thanks Andy, it was very kind of you to take the trouble to post those. I feel my faith has already been rewarded.
