What's new

Next razor: 38c or 39c or ?

Hi all,

I've been shaving with a DE for a couple of months now, loving it, and I feel the need to buy a new razor (wich will sound familiar to most of you) but not only to expand the collection, but also for better results.

I currently use a Merkur 30c. It's fine but it's a bit small and a bit light. My beard is quite thick and hard and I have a very sensitive skin.(Great combo) with the 30c I cant let the razor do the Work all the time, I have to apply more pressure, wich I think is Because of the light Weight of the razor.

Now, ofcourse I've been looking around a lot. Both the merkur 38c and 39c got my interest, Because of their Weight, size and good reviews. I find the 39c extra interesting due to the 'slant'.

I'm doubting if I should go for the 39c straight away or try the 38c first. I have to say that I'm comfortable with my technique now and I think when you have respect for the tool, you Don't have to be afraid of it.

how Much I would like to try them all, life is expensive enough as it is.

So, let me know you opinion/ideas or ofcourse other suggestions (considering my beard and skin type)
It Will be highly appreciated.

Gr. Tim

Unfortunately, I don't own the 39C but I do own a Merkur 38C. The 39C will probably get the most votes. I too have a thick beard and sensitive skin I found the Merkur 38C to be nearly perfect for me. The weight seemed a bit too much at first but in time I actually preferred the heaviness of the 38C. After 2 years of using the 38C I get great results and it's one of the few razors I am glad I bought. It's a smooth shaver with just a little bit of bite (for me). Due to my wiry facial hair I have been trying single edge razors as well.

Thanks for the response. I think I wouldn't be dissapointed if I bought the 38c. I would love to hear the experience of people who own both. The Futur is a bit to expensive for me know, but if it's really a good choice, Maybe its worth saving up for. I won't be looking into SE for now. Maybe thats something for the future.

I'm going to predictably vote for the 39C. It gives me a closer shave with less irritation than my Futur (which I've gradually opened all the way up to 6.5), and in fact gave me my first shave with a comfortable ATG pass. I think the slant mount makes all the difference, as it prevents tugging/pulling.

That said, I like the 2013 R41 even better. Despite it's aggressive reputation, I find it to be a docile pussycat that makes it incredibly easy to get a comfortable, smooth shave. Definitely my first choice, followed immediately by the slant. My Futur is now sadly neglected.

Yes, tugging/pulling I experience reguraly with my 30c, thats How I came on the 38/39c, I think I'm slightly in favour for the 39c now.

I've ordered the 39c. Can't wait?

Just go slow and focus on proper angle. FOCUS!!! and you will be rewarded. I tried one recently with my coarse hair and sensitive neck. Nothing has come close to this feeling of euphoria from the close shave WITHOUT irritation.

Looking forward to hearing your experience

So, First shave today with the 39c and...............what a fantastic piece of kit, smoothest shave I have ever had. Both the extra Weight and the 'slant' Work really well for me.

Wait til you get more comfortable with it :thumbup1:. It was a game changer literally for me

I'm with you guys: if I HAD to just shave with one razor, my Hoffritz slant (a clone of the 37C) would definitely be on my short list.

I've got a 38c and it is a great razor, but strikes me as pretty mild (more aggressive than a tech, but less than say an open comb). I really like the weight and the balance. It is heavy enough that it does most of the work. I'll probably be picking up a 39c soon, because I like the size, but have been into more aggressive razors lately.
