What's new

Next Brush?

As is common around these parts I have come down with a case of SBAD. My first brush was A VDH Boar and was my only brush for about two years then recently I ordered an EJ razor and got an EJ boar brush to match. A badger was soon to follow to the tune of a Simpson Special Best badger, then a SOC with a cherry handle and currently on order is a Simpson Commodore X3 and the new red handle B&B essential omega brush. I'd like to expand the collection further but want to try and not repeat myself. So far all my brushes have different knot sizes and lofts or hair types, I want to avoid having the same knot in multiple handle styles so that every brush I have has a little something different to bring to the table. My price range is around the $100 mark and so far I like both boar and badger brushes, tend to bowl lather almost exclusively and want some input on what the next step in this collection might be. I have been thinking about a travel brush or possibly a good face lather-er but mostly I want something that offers a good bang for the buck and wont just be a paper weight. Any suggestions and personal experiences with other brushes and the likes and dislikes in your opinion along with pictures would be great.

Something that is a soap destroyer. That way you replace often and not get sick of the same soap. Oh and you get mountains of lather from it!

1/2 either Rooney or T&H in silvertip.

good bang for the buck, right around your price point, and good for face lathering.

Now that's some eye candy!

Rooney brushes are great - I have several in the 3/1 handle.

But if you want to widen your brush experience, have you considered a horse hair brush?

There's a range at Gifts & Care (in Spain). I recently got this and it's great with very soft tips - and pretty cheap...

Or perhaps consider a Semogue SOC SE 2012 mixed badger/boar? It's nice and firm for face lathering but it works fine for bowl lathering too, and has a little scritch but not too much - and as it's part boar, it will improve as it breaks in (it's a limited edition but some vendors, including a couple of US ones, still have some)...

Both nice looking specimens, and I have pondered on the possibility of horse hair but have read that they aren't very dense. I don't require Chubby type density but at least on par with my SOC or Simpson Special in Best, or maybe someone could convince me otherwise.

It's true that the horse hair knots are not very dense and don't take to "scrubbing" very well - I think something to do with the nature or profile of the hairs means you can't really pack them densely.

The SOC SE has good density, though.

I would take a look at the Shavemac #25 in fine or Silver tip. The Fine is around $89 and the silvertip is around $120 at WCS. check those out I love my Shavemac..... Its my second one

Take a look at the Da Vinci 293. On sale at Wm Neumann right now for $99. Just got one the other day and have only used it once but it impressed me.

Nice looking brushes, looks like most of these suggestions are right around the 23mm knot size which I like. Love the handle on the Da Vinci

I would say the Da Vinci is my favorite in the unique category but the handle color/material on those Rooney brushes are beautiful

Ive had this Simpson Colonel about 3 weeks now. Very happy with it. This is only my second brush.

Try a Rooney/T&H. Here's my 3/1, 1/2 and 1/1. Not as dense as my Simpson Rover (or my former Duke 2) but more versatile.
