What's new

Newbie

Greetings,

Hi Bradley A aka coyotewhisper. I interested in purchascing my first safety razor. I like suggestions for a first time safety razor that is moderately priced.
I have ben shaving with the typical disople blade system. The cos tof replacemnt blades is becoming cost prohabtive, the shave is not all that great either. Of course any other suggestions would be helpful for a first timer.
Many Thanks

Welcome!

For my part, learning on a superspeed was an excellent way to start. I used a 40s superspeed, and kept a flare-tip in the dopp for overnighters. If I had to do it over again, I'd have learned on the flare-tip, because the head is a little flatter, and it's easier to get under the nose as a result. Both of those seem equally aggressive to me, and the 40s superspeed remains my main shaver.

Hope it helps,
-- Chet

Welcome!! As far as first razors I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable gents here can give you better advice but for me I chose the Merkur 1904 closed bar for my first. I have since found I prefer the vintage Gillettes but not neccesary because they shave better. I still use my 1904 weekly and find it is a very good shaver when paired with a decent blade. For what it's worth it also looks very nice and can be had cheaper than the other Merkurs (even though it has the exact same head as the regular and HD).

My 3 most frequently used razors are also good starter razors and none will break the bank:
1) 40's style SuperSpeed
2) Merkur 34
3) Ball-end Tech

The recommendation of a flare tip superspeed or an undated superspeed is an excellent. Personally, I would lean towards the undated. Here's a pic from one of our most illustrious members, Achim, aka "Mr. Razor"

That being said, a Fat Handled Tech is hard to beat for an entry level razor. Each of these razors appear regularly on our BS&T forum. Here's a link for the Fat Tech

Check out this current thread, I don't know the seller, but these are what you are looking for. PM the seller and make sure the ones you are interested in are mechanically perfect. Have fun and welcome to B&B.
