What's new

Newbie to the pipe, suggestions please?

So I am going to purchase a starting pipe set and was hoping that I could get some gentlemanly recommendations for a good pipe and tobacco on a budget. I do know that I don't want corn cob but other than that, I'm open to all suggestions.

Well, if you are dead set against a corn cob pipe, my next recommendation would be a Dr Grabow, that can often be found at Rite Aid and Walgreens. Then select one of the over the counter well respected tobaccos like Cater Hall, Half and Half, Prince Albert, Sir Walter Raleigh, or Captain Black.

Pick up some pipe cleaners, and a tamper and you will be all set to have some fun in this hobby.

Alternatively, PipesandCigars offers some nice starter sets as well, and Smoking Pipes has a nice looking starter as well:

Awesome, thank you!
I went to the website and I think that this is what I'm looking toward:

Any opinion either way?

If you happen to have a tobacconist near you, stop in. They may have some "basket pipes" available. These are generally name brand pipes that have defects or flaws and as such are deemed unworthy of being stamped by the maker. You may be able to get a good pipe for a deal. I found my local tobacconists tobacco pricing to be quite inexpensive at only $3 an ounce for some mild virginia blend and some cherry pipe tobacco. I'm a noobie myself. Still trying to get my pipe to stay lit longer than 30 seconds.

Looks like a pretty nice setup to me. The pipe is meant to look like a Peterson.

If you are already covering the cost of the shipping with the kit, you can add on some bulk tobaccos for $2 an ounce if you buy 4oz. Lane 1Q is pretty highly regarded.

The Victory Lap sampler also seems to be a nice deal at 8oz of tobacco for $19.95.

In the late 1990's I started with a variety of inexpensive basket pipes from my local tobacconist. That gave me an inexpensive way to figure out my own likes and dislikes without spending more than $10 or $20 per pipe. You could probably do the same today, but the prices would be more like $30 or $40 per pipe.

Don't be too quick to dismiss the corn cob pipe. I used a few of them to fill out my rotation until I could afford several better pipes to replace them with. Now my cobs are all down at my weekend place and don't see much use, but they served the purpose of giving me something to smoke while my better pipes rested and dried out.

Here are the descriptions of the included tobaccos:

Saint George: Black Cavendish, Rich Virginia and Sweet Black Cherry.
Roma Vita: mixture of Burley, and Virgina.

So you are getting a aromatic, and something that should be similar to an American over the counter tobacco. Looks like pretty good choices.

Man, you guys are awesome and helpfu! I also just realized how little I know about the pipe! I believe there is a tobacconist about a mile and a half from me downtown. Where all the antique shops are. Looks like I'm going to break the bank tomorrow with all the stuff around!

Yep...you're going to fit in with the Brown Leaf crowd just fine.

Welcome to the BL, Brian! Great advice above! Enjoy your smokes and don't be afraid to ask any and all questions you may have!

Pipesandcigars.com sells bulk pipe tobacco by the ounce for an average of about $5 an ounce (and you can order as little as 1 ounce of just about anything they sell, and they carry just about everything). Tobaccoreviews.com rates just about every tobacco ever made, and you can learn a lot by knocking around there in your spare time. For bulk tobaccos, I recommend McClelland's extensive line of tobaccos as a good starting point. Their bulk #2015 is currently my favorite VaPer tobacco.
