Newbie Merkur Question

Hello, I just received my Merkur razor (first safety razor). This is a total newbie question, but twisting the handle adjusts the blade, but it's not entirely obvious what this does. It appears that it adjusts the closeness of the blade to your skin, but I'm not sure. Can someone clear this up? Also, are there some general recommendations on adjusting that setting for someone brand new to safety shaving? I've been electric shaving for 15 years.

Are you talking about the Merkur Progress? If yes, then the twist bottom does indeed increase aggressiveness (closeness). Lower settings are tamer than higher settings. Pls confirm model of razor.

i dont have one, but im pretty sure it changed the ammount of blade exposed and the angle (very slightly)

The lower numbers are best to start with, 1 or 1.5 for most guys, then gradually increase as comfort/confidence builds. Don't start at 5.

+1 here. Start low and see how it goes. If you start too high you'll make a mess of your face.
