What's new

Newbie Blade Quandry

Just started using my SuperSpeed; first DE in over 25 years!! First three shaves were with a Derby I was PIFed. Tossed it just because I wanted to try more of my samples; blade had worked well. Put in a Feather hi-stainless. Have used that for three shaves; worked probably better than the Derby. Now I have RBAD!!! Want to order more Feathers! Except I have a sample packs of Derbys, Iridiums, 7 O"clock Yellows and Feathers left! And I want to start using my newly acquired Tech in the morning with ??? in it!!! Don't know what will work well with it!!! I hope I can get a grip on my "need" to order something long enough to get through the samples!!!

My husband liked the derby's in his superspeed. Humm...let's see...but since you've tried those go with the sevens!

Resistance is futile! Surrender, and close your ears to the screaming of your wallet!

Feed the AD's. It's your only hope...

Before you start hoarding blades you might better go through your sample pack first; when done try even more and then start buying them by the 100s.

I made the mistake of going for the first blade that seemed to be a bit better than the rest and ended up with about 100 blades that were only mediocre with hindsight. Take your time testing them!!

I've enjoyed the 7 O'Clocks. I'm relatively new to this and have been trying a few. These seem to be right for me. Also have liked Sharps.

Wise words here. I have almost pulled the trigger on 2 100 blade packs without ever trying them. I used an astra super platinum the other day and it was awful IMHO so glad I didn't go all out and get 100000000 of those. :001_smile

Try the Iridiums next. I understand that they are no longer in production so if you try them and like them a lot, you can begin the fun journey of tracking down any pockets of remaining stock. Ask the Swede lovers about that.

I use old dried banana peels for blades! Love 'em!

What? They don't work for you? You must be strange.

Truth is, what works for that guy with ten thousand posts, or the guy who was kicked in the head by a mule as a child and likes Treets, or the dude who swears that Dorco blades outperform Feathers IF you strop them on your wife's posterior while she's asleep doesn't really matter to ol' john parker, the man in question here.

Yes, there are trends, but the only way to know for sure is to make like Sam I Am from Green Eggs and Ham and try them, try them, then you'll see. Sampler packs are great for this.

Another thing to consider is price...In my case, I find Bolzano blades to be quite nice, but there are blades that do as well for me and are nicer to my wallet. Call me a cheap, walleyed no good son-of-a-swab who secretly thought Mary Ellen from the Waltons was kind of hot, but if I found a blade that was almost as good but half the cost of brand X, then it's so long brand X.

Have a Yellow 7 O'Clock loaded up in the Tech for tomorrow. Will give it a spin and see what it does. Not sure I like the wax on the blade when I put it in, but read that it doesn't really hurt anything. Can't honestly say I noticed that much difference between the Derby and the Feather I tried in the SuperSpeed. Didn't know that the Iridiums were discontinued; in fact, I read somewhere that they weren't. Thanks all, John

When RBAD hits, it's bad... I still have left overs here... Some of the blades are discontinued now...

Just finished shaving with the Yellow 7 O'Clock! Think I probably introduced too many variables to make a scientific analysis: used GFT Violet cream for the first time in an age (nice but tingly), used the Tech for the first time ever and used the Yellow for the first time ever. Frankly, after shave #1 with the Yellow, I do not notice any difference between it and the Feather. DFS without burn, nicks or cuts! Which, I might add, is just exactly what I am looking for! Will continue this experiment! What I have learned so far: there is a lot of fun in variety! Thanks, John

I truly understand your enthousiasm but if you want to find the specific quality of a product you should only change one variable...

Like this you will end up having some great experiences as well as some poor ones without knowing what to blame. Just my 2 cents.

Super Iridiums are in production, and available from a vendor who is banned from this shaving site, but active on another.

Stick with the Derbys for a while and work on your technique. You may find blades work differently for you as your technique improves. Best way to monitor your technique is to keep other things constant, like blades and razors.
