What's new

New to this

Hey everyone I've been reading this tread lately and have been thinking about getting a fountain pen. I don't want to spend a lot maybe under $30. I've been looking at new and some older vintage ones
but don't know which way to go. I would use it for everyday use I don't write a ton but I take down a lot of notes throughout the day. I would like something that writes smooth and dries fast. Thanks for any help you can give.

Vintage ones are tough to buy online for a first pen, have a look at the pilot metropolitan, its kind of become the merkur HD of the nib... well liked by new guys and experienced guys alike and enough left over for ink as well

Pilot Metropolitan, or a 78G if you want something a little lighter. You can buy a full bottle of ink and still stay under your limit.

Pilot 78G you can get for 10 bucks shipped, if your interested we can help you find the buyer for them, and the Metro you can get from Gouletpens.com...

have a look at them and tell us what you think, if neither interest you much I have a few other pens I could share with you as well

Pilot's a good brand. Just make sure you go with a medium nib to start, the pilot fine is REALLY fine, and not good for a new FP user as I discovered.

I just read the reviews on the 78g and metro they both look like nice starter fp will have to look at more reviews. This my sound like a dumb question but will any ink work in these or are there certain inks that work better in these ones?

Syngent were can u get a 78g for $10.
Thanks for the help

Any fountain pen ink will work, just make sure it's fountain pen safe. The $10 78g deal is available on ebay, just type in "Pilot 78g."

78g is a great starter FP and is a gateway drug to the world of FPs. I recently picked one up from Pokydady.com, which is in Hong Kong, for $10 shipped. Had the pen in a matter of days. The fine nib is very fine, so unless you write small, the medium nib is probably the best place to start. As for ink, I have used Parker Quink in my with good success. A lot of guys like inks by Noodlers also.

Thanks everyone for your response I been thinking about getting both the metro and the 78g. But I have a question is there a big enough difference in the way they write to get a feel for the way different fp write.

All pens write differently, especially fountain pens. Get them both now, sell (bahahahahahaahahaahahahahahaahahahahahahahaa) whichever one you don't want (BAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH HAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAHA HAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHA) on the BST. You'll be fine. Don't worry. It's not addicting at all.

Cheers,

M.

Well... the only way to know if they write differently for you is to buy both. It's not a bad move in any event. The nibs are interchangeable, so you can buy a 78g with a fine nib and a Metro with a medium and play around with them a little. For about $25, you get two pens with interchangeable nibs and a good introduction to fountain pens. If you find you don't like FPs, then you're not out much and if you do like them (which would be my guess), then you have a good start on your addiction... I mean collection. :biggrin1:

Starter pens last a good 3-4 months before upgrade envy hits... Granted it depends on if you're a hardware or software guy with pens. So many ink and paper choices. And then wax seals etc.

Thanks everyone this site has the best forums with the nicest people. I've belong to many different forum on lots of different things. And I can sat this is by far the best.

You like us now... but wait until your credit card is maxed out and you have more pens, ink, and paper than you know what to do with. :001_tongu

It would hurt me to the quick to learn of folk indulging via credit. Up to you all of course but I personally do not want to give the banks anymore of my hard earned cash than I have to.

I hear you I paid off all my cards now me and the wife only buy things if we have money in the bank to buy it right now.

I can say that I've never maxed one out and that I pretty much pay them off, in full, each month. That said... statistics say that I'm definitely in the minority.
