What's new

New Parker 98R

I suspect its the same head they have been using since last year. In other words "mild"

In the reviews for the Parker 91R the head is said to be aggressive. The head has been changed from that to something milder?

I know the head for the twist to open has been changed to a milder one, but I hadn't heard anything about the 3 piece.

I know I've said it elsewhere, but Parkers are a little unpredictable. I had a 91R that was so mild I checked to make sure I had put the blade in. Others said it was the most aggressive razor they'd used. I used a 96R that felt that way.

I've got an 82 now, and it's somewhere in between.

i've been lurking for some time but haven't registered until recently. I did a thread on the parker 98 (can't do a review b/c i don't have enough posts).

the 98 is my favorite razor in the collection. it's smooth yet gives an impeccable shave everytime. of course, i've got less to compare it to than some folks who are real collectors. my arsenal is only the gillette slim, gillette SS, the merkur HD, the 22r parker and the merkur long handle slant 39c. i wouldn't say the 98 is more aggressive than the 39c but it gives me a better shave as i can make more passes without the irritation that the 39c sometimes gives. it's sheer weight makes it easy to glide over my face. when grown, i've got a beard that makes osama bin laden's look like peach fuzz.

i've paired the 98 with cheap blades like shark, medium priced ones like bluebird and the higher end merkur and feather blades. it works well with them all. hell, i even dropped that big ol' thing on the tile in my bathroom and it came back up shaving without a problem.

I can't speak for all parker razors as ymmv and i haven't tried them all, but the B and B site seems to really come down hard and unfairly on parkers just because they're made in India.

Welcome to B+B.

I don't think their country of manufacture is the issue--for every negative comment about Parkers there are more positive comments about Godrej cream, and a lot of B+Bers use Indian-made blades (SuperMax, Gillette 7 O'Clock and some Wilkinson Swords.)

I've owned 4 Parkers and to me they're hit-or-miss. I'm glad you got a hit, and will admit I'm interested in the new 98R. I'm just more cautious based on past experiences.

Thanks for your review. I'll definitely give this Parker a once over now.

I'm new to DE shaving, in the process of switching from Mach 3. The Parker 98R is the first (and only, so far) DE I bought, so my thoughts are based on NO other experience.

First, I love the weight. If I do "graduate" or "upgrade" to another razor in the future, I hope to find one that weighs as much. It just feels good to hold. I'm still learning (and this site has taught me more in a few hours than a month of experimentation -- thanks all!), so I do nick myself, get razor burn, etc. (generally from impatience and inattention). I switch back to the Mach 3 every few days because it is SO much easier, and would have given up on the DE (but NOT my brush and soap!) weeks ago -- but the razor keeps drawing me back to try again.

I don't see any signs of poor quality. All of the pieces fit together well, the blade sits well with a very even gap. As I said, though, I don't really have enough experience to judge this.

My conclusion: at $35 (and free shipping via Amazon Prime) I'm very satisfied. I'll spend more time choosing my next razor (and not until I get consistent results with this one so I know what I want), but it won't be because of anything wrong with this one.

As an Indian, I would like to protest to this comment. People are speaking from their experience. The kind of love and respect shown for Indian products in this as well as other wet shave forums would not be if things were prejudiced just because they are from India.

To say this tantamounts you to painting all B&Bers as racist, which I want to be the first one to protest.

I also suspect when I see any or in fact all of your posts, they are invariably only about the Parker razors and their goodness with no reference to any other things wet shaving.

Can it be or is it - that you are asscociated with the company in some way. If you are I would ask you to stand up and face the opinion of the cross section of members in the opinion of the Parker and work for its improvements.

The crowd at B&B is waiting for a well constructed Parker razor and when this happens, they will be up for grabs !!

I have the Parker 99R, which is like the 98 except with TTO, and find it to be much like a Merkur 38C shaving wise. Fit and function are fine for the money involved....I haven't done any review on it, though, to avoid the often times hysterical bashing against Parker razors!

You tell 'em beyboo

If anyone could attest to the quality and consistency of Parkers, it would be someone who lives there and has sought the opinion of others there in the shaving world.

+1

The head looks a little different in the pic along the guard bar comared to that of my Parker 94R, wj=hich is the most aggressive razor I own. It commands respect but gives great shaves. I just take mu time and give a little more time with prep and shave. Again the parker 94R is a great razor with a great fit 'n' finish. I may even consider one of their TTO maybe the 96R. Looks kinda black beuty to me.

I've noticed that Parkers don'tt get a lot of love around here. I will have to try one because from the photos I've seen, they make some beauties.

I have the 82R. Parker makes some very nice looking instruments, but I doubt their craftsmanship. Depending on how well they were comming off the line that day. I only have one parker but judging by the thoroughly 2 sided reviews they get, I imagine they are not consistant with there quality control.
That being said, who knows! You might end up with a very nice family heirloom or one like the one I got.

On another note, those Shark blades are great!

The head looks like those in ej d89/muehle r89. Are they the same? OP mentioned that it's similar to merkur. That's a nice alternative to EJ/Muehle for beginners on a budget.
