New Merkur Slant

My new Merkur Slant just showed up in the mail! I love the way this razor looks. I'm still a newbie and very much working on my technique, so I'm going to have to apply some patience and wait awhile to use this.

That's wise. Get your technique down first so that it's second nature. Slants can be cruel mistresses when not treated with respect.

You're not just toying with me are you? Most of the posts I've read say how aggressive they are. I suppose that would make me pay even more attention to my technique.

As long as you get the blade loaded in there properly, with the edges of the blade parallel to the edges of the top cap, you are all set. They may be aggressive in the amount of hair they remove, but they are really comfortable shavers. I can't guarantee satisfactory results, but you might be surprised.

Well, I think I'll take your advice. I'll wait until the end of the week to get a few more shaves under my belt with the HD and then take the new one out for a spin. Thanks for the encouragement.

Read it completely. About mid-way through there is an excellent technique for loading the blade with a Slant.

It just depends on how your shaves are now. I started with an HD and it didn't take me long to crank my slim, fatboy, and toggle up to 9. The slant was certainly no more aggressive than these, so I wasn't too astounded when I got to try one. A careful noob like I was may bea good candidate for a slant. I used to really give razors lot of respect and shave slowly with zero pressure

Did you get the HD or Barber Pole Slant?

Eric, thanks for posting that. I think the photos could be better, but then I am always a harsh critic.

Just do it. ZERO Pressure. Don't even think of pressing down. Just take it nice and easy, use a new blade (Red Pack Personna, Astra, Derby, Dorco ST301, for example) and you'll be fine.

I got the HD. I loaded it with a Derby after reading the thread on how to drop in the blade.

Well, no I have to do it. Tomorrow morning it goes for the test drive. I'll let you know the results.

I started using my HD Slant about two months ago and absolutely love it! My other razors have been gathering dust since I started using it. You will love it too I'm sure. I have been using the yellow 7'oclocks and have yet to have a blade load improperly.

I started with a Lord Tech about 3 months back. Jumped on to a Super Speed 2 months back and today I started with my new slant. I used with the Gillette Super Platinum from India and I should say I loved it. With just two WTG passes I got an excellent shave. Another fan of Slant.

Actually, really well. I'm glad I got the encouragement to try it out. I was going to wait for awhile until my technique got better, but I am getting better shaves with this than the 34C HD I started with.
