What's new

New Castle Forbes packaging.

I was suspicious about a new-in-the-box tub of CF Lavender cream I bought on the BST here last week. As you can see, the labeling on the new tub (on the left) is "minimalist" compared to the old tub (and it's all in English; no French). I also flipped the tub over and also noticed that the tub itself was sourced from a different supplier. The box, which I threw away, seemed more consistent with the traditional CF packaging.

I thought: "Hmmm...counterfeit cream - who would bother?", but when I lathered it up, I knew it was the real thing. On the other hand, the plain-looking jar just doesn't seem consistent with a luxury product like CF

Hello vocalistbob, I bought two tubs of CF Lavender from a perfume and fragrance company in NY a couple years ago and the packaging is identical to the one in your photo(on left). Minimalist printing and in English instead of French. So I don't think its really new packaging since they've used it before. And maybe the tub you bought is older. BTW,the performance of the tubs I bought 2 years ago was superb as usual for all the CF creams. Craig

The difference in packaging could be based on the country its being sold in and the different requirements of those places?

Interesting thread - I wonder if this also means a reformulation is imminent!

Please forgive my ignorance: why would a castle in Scotland have French on their shaving products?

Not unusual at all. I've seen some cars from Scotland with the oval-shaved country of registration sticker on the back and Scottish flag showing "Eco" or "Ecosse" - the French word for Scotland. Maybe it's trying to tell the English how much they are despised [ :biggrin1: ] or for some other historical reason that I am not aware of.

Yuck, that new tub on the left looks like crap. My CF products all look like the one on the right.

What the hell were they thinking?

Craig pretty much hit the nail on the head. The tub on the left does not feature new packaging. It has what was the standard packaging roughly six or so years back. There have been at least two packaging changes since then. The likely explanation is that you were sold old stock.

In order to sell the product in Canada, Switzerland, France, Belgium etc. You need French on the label. There are a few companies that put 5-6 languages on their products to cater to a more global audience.

To me it doesn't matter what it comes in as long as they don't change the actual cream. They could send it to me in a plastic bag if they wanted and I'd be ok with that.

Old version had parabens, newer version does not.

Not me.... if I'm going to pay that price tag, it better come in a nice container. It's one of my favorite creams. The packaging doesn't have to be terribly "glamorous and showy" for me (although I don't mind that either.... Pens, AdP, etc.), but I like a packaging that evokes tradition and familiarity.... along with a little class.

Too bad CF cream no longer comes in the glass jars. Those were among the nicest forms of cream packaging I've ever seen, although I've only ever seen them in pictures, since they were gone by the time I got into wet shaving. The plastic CF tubs have always seemed a little out of step with the quality of the cream, although the current label (shown on the right of OP's photo) is probably the best the current tubs have looked since the company ditched the glass.
