Never used AS before this week...advice needed

Until this week I had never used any aftershave and could really use some help/advice.

Bought an AoS lavender kit that included AS balm which I have used this week. My skin is sensitive I think and a little oily but I have had problems with my skin drying out where I shave and so have a facial moisturizer on hand. I noticed by the end of this week my face was starting to "breakout" where I was using the AS.

The light sent has been nice during but not long after shaving and that's great because I use cologne most days.

Being new to DE shaving could be what is contributing to all this but, this is what I think I am looking for:

maybe an AS splash or toner to help keep my skin clear?

I know I'll need to use something to help repair/moisturize my skin also but am wondering if an AS balm with an As splash would be overkill?

Again any advice is appreciated

An AS balm with an AS splash is not overkill. One thought is to get some 444 and mix it with an AS splash you think you might like.

Feather Kanwa is a great AS gel/light balm that keeps the skin moist without leaving your skin with an oily/sticky feeling. Also, Kanwa wouldn't interfere with your cologne because it's basically scentless.

If you've never had the break out problem before, I would quit using the AoS for a few shaves and see if the problem persists.

BeeSeeDub - definitely a little razor burn today but still no nicks, my technique is surely a work in progress

Luc - the Wiki page has sooo much info, thanks

Witch hazel is often recommended here. It is a toner and can be used as an aftershave (as well as for many other uses). It can also be used in conjunction with a balm, like your AOS. You can get a store brand one for around $1.50 at a place like Walmart, Target, or your local pharmacy.

Thanks Patrick I did pickup the witch hazel, cheap at Target - I think that might have solved the problem

Also after reading about Osage rub it sounds great but I can't tell if that would serve as a toner?

I forgot to mention a tip I picked up from a Mantic video, you can use some of those round cotton pads to apply the witch hazel. I find it helpful.

You may want to try some of the Nivea for men aftershave products they have both balms and a splash, both of which are great. Every Man Jack also has a great post shave lotion, no SLS or parabens and one that is available with SPF protection. Both the Nivea products and the EMJ are fairly low priced, about $6. I recommend both.

Thanks Patrick I think those cotton pads will work well for the witch hazel

And thanks SuperChris - I was beginning to wonder if there was something with SPF protection since we're heading into summer

I see Nivea recommended quite a bit

Great Advice.I shower, wash my whiskers and clean my face. After I dry off, I put a little Corn Huskers on my face. Then, I lather.I lather before each shave.4 passes with rinse, lather and shave - WTG, XTG, Reverse XTG and finally ATG.Then, with the remaining lather I buff.I rinse with hot water, then, cold water. Then, I use an Almu Block.Rinse with cold water. Then, I use Which Hazle with a cotton pad. Then, I use Nivea. Then, I put on my aftershave and cologne.

That is kind of where I'm headed, though I must ask...what is Corn Huskers?

I am not ready for 4 passes yet but I do hot water rinse then with cold water rinse then witch hazel, moisturizer, cologne

I also use AoS, but the unscented one, and I have oily skin. After my first few shaves, I was breaking out as well...At first I thought it may have been the AoS products, but then I focused on my technique (not applying any pressure and holding the razor at the proper angle), and my face cleared up nicely.

Also, +1 for Witch Hazel. That stuff is awesome.
