It looks like a modular set like the Falcon or Kirsten pipes. I don't know why you would need all 12 but at $25 each they are a pretty good deal.
Well that is odd, I've never been that big into the Falcon pipes and I think I would let these pass by too.
My dad used to have a Falcon or Kirsten pipe back in the late 80's or early 90's... I remember it now. lol

I also wonder if this design changes the way the pipe smokes, since the smoke is drawn through the bottom of the bowl, rather than through the side as normal.

I bet it smokes better. My gourd calabash with the draft hole at the bottom of the cup smokes every fleck of tobacco I put in it. Dottle is a nonexistent term with that pipe.
I've got a spool that's drilled through the bottom that also smokes like a dream. The only issue I've run into is when I 'abuse' the pipe and smoke more than three bowls consecutively, it does tend to get pretty moist and can even spit.
I have a Kirsten pipe that either smokes absolutely wonderfully or the worst piece of .... in the world. The problem with the bottom draft hole is that more often than not a piece of tobacco will find itself blocking up the airway. The Kirsten design has a long poker attached to the mouthpiece, so you have to take it out, jam it into the draft hole to clear it. Problem is if yoiu've smoked a bowl the tobacco juice will run out of the body of the pipe and find it's way onto your clothes...

reminds me of Tommy Lee Jones in Space Cowboys when he is talking about the Blackbird, terrible *** until you get it going then it is the best.
It reminds me a lot of hte falcon pipes.....I havent ever heard anything great about them....
