What's new

Need some advice...

Hey all, I have an old Gillette SS that was in the family and is pretty beat up cosmetically. I would like to have it restored; can anyone recommend a good restoration person. I'm thinking it may need replated, but don't know for sure. Thanks for your help...

Sometimes a good old toothbrush can do miracles!

Have you tried cleaning it yet? I've had a few diamonds in the rough that turned out beautiful with some elbow grease.

Another vote for elbow grease!

Short of re-plating, you can resto it all yourself - show us what she looks like

The issues with it is it has a lot of brassing and some of the plating is missing on one side of the handle because it was kept in the glove box of my grandpa's pick-up (rubbing). I was just curious as to a recommendation to someone who is experienced with razors. I know that many places replate, but I want it to be taken care of and done professionally. I want it to look like it did 60 years ago...

Personally - I would just clean it up and leave it alone. If I wanted to use that model/year razor on a regular basis I'd buy one in good condition. It would probably be less expensive than trying to get it rechromed. Super Speed razors are pretty common on ebay. Given their monetary value I don't think they classifiy as heirlooms.

Clean it with an ultrasonic cleaner (they're cheap and really useful!) and use it as is. In the case of an heirloom I wouldn't want it to look new...it's earned that brassing and you know who used it.

Fyi you can get a great razor (modern or vintage) for what it would cost to replate (~$30). Personally, I think it's pretty cool that the razor's been in your grandfather's pickup for decades--since brass doesn't corrode, why not polish it up and tell your cool granddad story from time to time?
