Need help deciding on a new soap/cream...

Ok so I've been wet shaving now for roughly 3 months, and have been using Col. Conk soap for the majority of those months...it lubricates very well and I can get a great lather from it, but it dries my face out and leaves my skin feeling like it's coated with wax. I also bought a tube of Jack Black shave cream, and though it is very moisturizing and I love the smell, I have a hard time getting some really decent, lubricating lather out of it. I need suggestions from some more knowledgeable folks about what to use as my next cream/soap. I don't really have a preference between soap or cream, though since I will be living in a dorm environment in two weeks time I figure a cream in tube form would be a bit more convenient. I just need something that is affordable (no more than 15 dollars I'd say, but less than 10 is the ideal) and gives excellent, lubricating lather. I don't really like strong scents...so creams like proraso aren't really my thing...I like neutral or herbal smelling things... Anyways, all the help is appreciated :001_smile

My recommendation would be to get the Geo F. Trumper sample pack from the GFT website. You will get a sample of a couple of cream, skinfood, colognes for less than $15. It will give you an idea if you like their products and you will get different types to work with.

If you want something quickly, Proraso/bigelow would be my pick or Omega (less menthol than Proraso).

Mama Bear has AMAZING shaving soaps. They are quite moisturizing, produce slick lather, are very inexpensive($6~$9 for a 4oz), and she has more flavors than you can chose from. She also does samples so you can try a couple, or a couple dozen!

Van Der Hagen Soaps I think would be right up your alley. They are very cheap, locally available, and have a very understated scent. The Deluxe would probably be your best bet but they have a glycerine I find very similar to col conk.

A couple of great cream options in the tube would be Godrej Delux or Musgo Real. They have lanolin and both give slick moisturizing shaves. VDH is a good soap but I don't see much difference from Col Conk, same factory unless I'm mistaken. A very moisturizing soap is MWF.

You could pick up a Valobra shave stick for under 10 bucks. I've had one for about a week and I'm surprised with how much lather I can get from such a small product. It has a pretty neutral/old time clean scent to it. Palmolive and Speick shave sticks work just as well too, but have stronger scents.

Maybe a stick of ARKO. Very affordable and produce's a nice lather rather quickly. Or step up a notch and get an Irish Moos shave stick. It's just under $20:thumbup1:

All of the soaps discussed above are good products. I agree heartily with the Mama Bear suggestion. They are great performing soaps. It sounds like you are happy with Colonel Conk (for the most part). Have you considered an inexpensive AS balm to follow the Colonel?. Nivea balm for sensitive skin is very moisturizing and is basically unscented. Best part is that it is about $6 and a little goes a long way.

I often find that AS balms (like the nivea one, which I have tried) leave my skin too moisturized...making for an unpleasant oily sensation later on in the day
