What's new

Need Fatip help! Should I send my razor back for replacement?

Hi guys. I just got a new Fatip Piccolo OC razor for a (early) birthday present in the mail today. Before shaving with it I gave it a quick look over to see if it was in o.k. shape. In a nut shell I found some 'funny' things with it and need a some input from other Fatip owners to see if I need to send it back for a replacement or that is "the nature of the beast" and live with it. FYI I don't have a camera at the moment, pictures will come later.

1) The handle is covered in small scratches, like it was lightly rolled in gravel.

2) Around the threaded post on the top plate looks like it was welded on but they forgot to clean up the surface of the top plate before applying the plating.

3) The Two alinement posts on the top plate have a 'open' space in-between the post and top plate. like they were press fitted but not all the way down.

4) some odd 'junk' in the open space of the two posts (see #3). It almost looks like small bits that got stuck in-between the post and top plate.

If you have a Fatip please give it a quick look over and post your results on its condition! I am already of the opinion of sending it back for a replacement but I was wondering if it is still usable or not.

I just got a Fatip Piccolo and Grande in both Nickel and Gold and I'm not impressed with the craftmanship. I knew they weren't known for that but still, I don't get the luxurious feeling with them as I do with the Weber ARC/Fatboy Rhodium, or other nice razors.

1) The handle is covered in small scratches, like it was lightly rolled in gravel. Normal in my experience. I too have the Piccolo

2) Around the threaded post on the top plate looks like it was welded on but they forgot to clean up the surface of the top plate before applying the plating. Normal in my experience.

3) The Two alinement posts on the top plate have a 'open' space in-between the post and top plate. like they were press fitted but not all the way down. Mine isn't like this, but I assume this is why some must fiddle with the blade to get it to properly align sometimes.

4) some odd 'junk' in the open space of the two posts (see #3). It almost looks like small bits that got stuck in-between the post and top plate. Have no idea.

Happy Birthday!

Does you Fatip(s) shave well or was that a let down as well?

Simple...send it back quick.

Just finished communicating with Phil from Bullgooseshaving.net. He is sending a new razor out tomorrow! and I don't have to return the bad one because he doesn't want to reship it back to Italy.

Hot damn, I knew Bullgooseshaving.net was a great place to shop but I didn't realize Phil was such a great guy.

+1 for Bullgooseshaving.net

My piccolo was this way, but since I only bought it for the head I didn't care and tossed the handle in a drawer.

My nickel plated piccolo is this way I think, do you mean you can see a small dot in center of the head..through the plating? If so mine was the same, it is currently being replated though and I have no idea if this will fix that issue or not.

3) The Two alinement posts on the top plate have a 'open' space in-between the post and top plate. like they were press fitted but not all the way down.
Both my Piccolo and Grande heads are this way..there is just a tiny little gap between the posts and the head plate, while not ideal it doesn't affect the shave and I don't mind it personally.

4) some odd 'junk' in the open space of the two posts (see #3). It almost looks like small bits that got stuck in-between the post and top plate.
Small little dark specks that came out like dirt? Mine did this but a good scrub with a toothbrush in that small gap got rid of it all.

Keep in mind these are relatively cheap mass produced razors that shave amazingly well. If superb quality is that important to you then I suggest maybe looking into a Joris. They provide a similar if not identical shave and the quality is top shelf, as is the price.

Thanks for the replies guys! Just an update: Since Phil is sending me a new razor and I don't have to send this one back I gave this razor a closer look with a blade in it to see if I could shave with it. In Short, No I can't shave with it.
One side of the top plate (the part that holds the blade over the Comb) was trimmed too much and bends the cutting edge in a slight 'U' shape. The blade is smiling at me, and I can hear the words; "BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!" going through my mind when I look at it.

Hopefully, I'm not threadjacking here, but I didn't want to start a new thread.

I got a FaTip recently as well, with some of the same issues as the OP (rough, welded look by the threaded post; gaps on the side posts) which don't really bother me that much, as I was expecting a rough finish.

However, mine also has a spot of brassing on one of side posts. Is this normal? If yours had the same issue, would you return/exchange it?
