Need Fatboy help!

I recently acquired a Fatboy on the bay. Someone please take it off my hands--no, just kidding--I absolutely love it--it's becoming my favorite razor. Question-when I tighten it so the doors are down, it's fine, but when I tighten it the extra 1/4 turn, that extra 1/4 turn is really tight. Much tighter than when closing the doors, which was relatively no resistance at all. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Bob

That is normal. The TTO knob should turn easily to a natural stop. Then a tighter 1/4 turn to lock down the setting. If you think the TTO is abnormally resistant and tight perhaps a good soak and clean may be in order.

Thanks, Steve. Is it like that only in adjustables? Because I have SuperSpeeds and a Ranger TECH that have a gradual resistance throughout the entire turn.

Well, the less tighter u tighten the SS the more aggressive it may shave. It is more like adjustment feature but not really functional or precise as a true adjustable.

Thanks, Alex. But do the superspeeds also have the 1/4 turn locking feature or is that just in the adjustables? And how are you making out with your R41? IIRC you were on the fence quite a bit on that one.

I like the r41 but not as a daily user. And i believe the feature is in the adjustables only .

This is a fairly common problem with all the Gillette adjustables. There is a little spring within the lock-down mechanism that sometimes gets cruddy. Soak the razor in very hot water and dish washing liquid for a few hours, changing the water several times to keep it hot. Then hit the bottom knob used to close the doors, including the bottom of the handle, with WD-40. BTW, the 1/4-turn at #1 will lengthen to about a 1/2-turn by #9.

The 1/4 turn tighten is a feature built into the adjustable razors to lock the 1-9 setting. On Super Speeds you just tighten until snug and that's it. Don't try to over-tighten or go 1/4 past snug.

Thanks, Steve. Yes, I did notice that lengthening of the 1/4 to a half from 1 to 9. Where exactly would you put the oil drops, through the bottom of the handle, on the side of the handle above the turning mechanism, or would it reach there from the little hole on the top of the razor?

Spray the WD-40 on the bottom of the handle, above the tuning mechanism knob, and then turn the razor upside down and spray the bottom of the handle. Some Fat Boys have two little holes on the bottom (which make it possible to disassemble the razor), and this facilitates the WD-40 getting to the locking mechanism.
