Need advice on Aftershave

I am brand new to straight razor shaving as I just started growing a goatee a few weeks back. Noticing that it is impossible to get close enough to the edges with my gillette fusion, it occurred to me that the old-fashioned way may help me remedy that. It did (after a bit of practice) and I decided to go all the way and use the straight razor only.

I enjoy this type of shaving but, when I use my old favs - Old Spice, Mennen Skin Bracer etc - it lights my face on fire. So I need some suggestions on appropriate aftershaves for use following a str raz shave. Thanks in advance for any input.

"Are you interested in Balms? Splashes like Old Spice and Skin Bracer but with less burn? Aftershaves with Menthol?"

I am interested in what works - I have no idea what to use besides what I've been using for years. Apparently, as Smalltank says, I need something other than what has alcohol in it. I am open to any suggestions - thought maybe someone here had a similar experience and could tell me what they used. Thanks.

Just curious, are you getting serious irritation? I just wonder if maybe you're experiencing a bad burn because of improper technique or something.

It is possible that my technique is improper as I'm still somewhat new at this. I don't have an ongoing irritation, just an extremely bad burn upon application of aftershave. After that, its gone. But the burn is WAYYYY worse than anything I've ever experienced with a modern cartridge razor.

I'm still a beginner and sometimes when I shave too close that burn kills! But usually it only lasts a few seconds or so. Have you tried AquaVelva? I find that Skin Bracer during a bad shave burns then dries my skin in a way that you can not understand!

It has glycerin which helps big time, plus it is SUPER cheap. If that doesn't work, a Nivea balm might work for you. I use their sensitive skin aftershave balm and it is really nice.

Also, try diluting with water. Keep your face and hands wet a little with cold water (or if you want, warm) and then splash some on. That definitely helps.

I would recommend St. Charles Shave products. 2 of their splashes I like are Dagger and the Lime. Their Sandalwood Balm is great on a close shave, and you can't beat the scent and price.
