What's new

Need a new DE

Friends,

I am currently DE-less. I have sold all of my DE's and have been getting great shaves with a Mach 3....ya ya I know.....

Anyway, I would like a DE but have never found one that has done a better job on my tough, curly, weird growing beard than my Mach 3.

I have used/owned/sold the following and didn't like them

Merkur HD - Too gentle, even with a feather

70's Superspeed - Even more gentle, useless

Slim Adjustable - I am too OCD to mess with adjustables, I messed with it in between passes

Feather Portable - surprisingly too aggressive, but did remove my beard much better than the above, and my skin....

Parker 22r - strangely enough, a good combo of aggressive and somewhat comfortable; however it was built a bit junky and had a spot or two where the blade exposure was off

So there it is, I need something that isn't adjustable, but is aggressive without being Feather Portable aggressive and is quality.

I will appreciate any suggestions!

Perhaps an Open Comb razor might be to your liking. The Gillette NEW in short or long comb can tackle curly beard. If you are looking for a modern razpr there are some nice offerings from Merkur, Joris, Goodfella, and Muhle.

Just curious, was your Merkur HD the open comb or safety bar type?

Just to mention it, try a Gem SE razor like a micromatic clogpruf or 1912 and see if that works for you. They arent expensive and if it doesnt work you can sell it and get your money out of it.

Goodluck

Second the New...cheap to try and wonderful shavers. I use one with sharp blades and a well-prepped face and it's better than anything else I've tried. Personally I find little difference between the short and long combs. I also see a lot of love for slants for tough beards, but have yet to try one.

+1 Good call forgot about the Slants. :thumbup1:

I'll edit this a bit, my beard gets curly...basically the issue is that most of it grows parallel to my skin, hence why the less agressive de's don't touch it and the m3 'fins' seem to grab it a bit, and provide a closer shave.

Would the open comb help lift flat hairs? I do use a brush, doesn't lift much.

The HD was a safety bar. The Gem seems to be a reasonable option.

Thanks to both of you.

That's what I notice about the Open Combs myself. The tend to lift the hair like a comb, or a rake on leaves. That's when the blade slices nicely. The NEW's are easily found in flea markets or auction sites. Try our BST section. If you want a new/modern razor and it does not work out you can easily sell it.

I think I'm gonna ask Santa for the Slant, after reading the DE Buyers Guide....my beard is "Heavy to Werewolf"

Lycans choose slants.

I also would go with a Gillette open comb. I would start with a New or consider one of the New Improved Gillettes (Bostonian, New Standard, Tuckaway) if you want something a little more aggressive.

What is the problem with Adjustables? A Progress would give you all the aggressiveness range you might want to try.

Incidentally I think a Feather Portable is generally regarded as much milder than an HD???

I'm gonna go out on a limb here... if the Mach 3 is giving you great shaves, why change?

Second the GEM! The 1912 has given me AMAZING shaves.

Gillette NEW was awful for me-gave me a serious bite. Still have that thing hiding in a cage somewhere!
