Need a new DE razor or two. Vision vs Progress? Slant or something else?

I discovered this board last year when I was surfing the net to buy a good shaving cream for my dad and needed to replace my 20 year old shaving brush :). Learned about wet shaving. Read tutorials and watched different videos about shaving, lathering etc. One thing led to another and I ended up buying a Savile Row 3824 for my self, an EJ silver tip (fox horn) for my dad and a Shavemac #177 23mm for my brother. I searched this site and read a lot of reviews before buying these brushes and other equipment and accessories. I am glad I did. Thanks for contributing.

I have been using an EJ DE89BL for almost a year now. A few days ago I accidentally dropped it in the sink and it broke. The handle just came off. Back to using the Gillette proglide until I buy another DE. I think that I should get an adjustable this time. Something more advanced, may be more aggressive since I now have some experience using a DE. I have been reading reviews and discussions about different razors and need some advice. Think I should buy two razors this time, one as a back up just in case :001_smile . I think that I should get one adjustable and one fixed.

Should I buy a Merkur Vision or a Merkur Progress? I am leaning towards the Vision unless there is something I missed that makes the Progress a better choice (price not a factor).

Not sure if a Slant is better for close shaves than a Vision (but its not adjustable). It could be my second razor but I was thinking of getting a different brand for back up. Sometimes I think that I should just re order the EJ DE89. But I have already used it. I like it but want to try something different. Something a little more aggressive I think, need help on this one.

My beard is rough. After 4 passes with the EJ DE89 I still have to do some cleaning up in certain areas to get the closeness I desire. My technique, I think, still needs some improvement because sometimes I cut myself more than I should. In almost a year I have cut the top part of my lip at least at three different occasions while shaving the area between my nose and lips (is this normal or is it just me?). It mostly happens when I am in a hurry (wife yelling etc), or being too picky (during third pass going against the grain, sometimes I think that I should not shave against the grain in this particular area?). I should watch the videos again and work on maintaining the 30 degree angle.

So my beard is rough and skin is normal with somewhat oily T zone. I use Proraso shaving cream and soap, make lather in a bowl, use preshave oil by "Shave Secret" (my neck area is sensitive, if I do multiple passes, which I do), Proraso aftershave splash and "Geo F. Trumper Skin Food". I have bigger than average hands (and face :001_smile ) I think, so may be razors with short handles may not be suitable for me? I hope this helps. Thanks. Back to search for me.......

I think the Futur will be a good choice for you. It has a good range and has nice weight to it. Some love the Vision but having used the used many adjustables including the Progress and Futur, the Futur won't disappoint.

I think Slant is a better bet for a tough beard...just use a mild blade like a blue n white Israeli Personna (says made in Israel)

If you don't like short handles, check out a merkur 39c, which is a great slant. Also, I agree with others that a Futur would be more of what you're looking for in an adjustable.

I am a Progress fan. I love the way the head bends the blade, making it somewhat easier to find the right angle. The bend also exposes the blade more, making it relatively aggressive (compared to Gillettes) at lower numerical settings. I think the Progress is a work of brilliance. The Futur is okay; it is bulky and hard to for me clean up the sub-schnozular region (upper lip). The Vision always seemd over-the-top to me. Love the Progress; and the slants as well although they are not adjustable.

As an aside, if you're beard is really tough, you may consider an open-comb like the Fatip. I like it and it gets excellent reviews on BB.

I would get the Slant and the Futur. They are both different enough. You could always easily sell one on these boards if you really wanted to. I predict you would keep both though. They are both that good.

Thanks for the input guys. I am going to find some Futur vs Vision threads and dig through them. I am surprised that no one has said anything about Vision yet.

Definitely getting a Slant but which one? One with the barber pole handle, sledge hammer or another slant? Looks like I have to read some more. Amazon has a 37C for $64.98 while WCS has one for $43.49. 39C ($51.75) is out of stock at WCS. Progress ($61.57), Futur ($78.26) and Vision ($154.63) are all available at WCS.

I am leaning towards 39C. Need to locate one......

A couple of years ago another B&B member and myself did a head to head of both the Vision and Futur razors. He backed out right after we had completed 14 days (7 days in a row with each razor) so I never posted my side of the match up

I should dig out my write up, sort it out and post it. At least this would be a one person comparison of both razors.

Anyway....

I own all you are considering Vision (had 2 at one time), Futur (had 2 of those at one time), Progress (had 5 of those at one time) and the slants which I have both styles, 39c long handle and 37c short handle.

I did write a review of both slants if you want to read that one while I see if I can put together the Vision/Futur comparison

My personal opion is that you could just toss a coin and get a winner no matter what you picked. I think the Vision is one of the best razors I have owned but I am in the minority on this. I have to FORCE myself to NOT use it, otherwise I would never pick up any of my other razors.

I totally agree with you. It is a matter of personal choice. I have to try all of these myself to find out which one/ones I like better. I already have a headache reading all the reviews and discussions.

I am just going to order whats available at WCS since I have purchased from them before. I am going to start with 37C and Futur. May be buy a Vision, 39C and Progress at a later time when I feel like I need to try something different.

Good choice. You can also consider Connaughtshaving.com for excellent deals on Merkur razors...to say the least.

Placed my order with WCS. As soon as I finished I realized that I need a stand for the two razors that I just ordered. Any suggestions.

Oh you are in for it if you are thinking about the progress. The 5 I had were all custom/modified progress models

This is the one I decided to keep (you don't want to know what I sold). The sky is the limit on custom Progress razors
