Nakayama on the way!

Telly is the man! Now the hard part is waiting. I hope to have the rest of my honing fleet revamped by the time it gets here. Im going with the Shapton Glass Hones. After I got my 16K I havent liked anything else Ive really tried.

Do I need to go all the way up to the 16K before the Nakayama or can I just go up to a 8K?

It really depends on the hone. They vary a lot, some would be fine to use after 8k others won't do much, unless you have a finer edge.

Telly told me that this stone has the quickest cutting rate from his dealer. Yes, I just said "his dealer." That how addicting they are!

well then you should be able to use it after 8k, may be even after 4k.
the person who would be of most help would he the 'dealer' since presumably he has used the hone if he says it has 'the fastest cutting rate'. of course it all depends on what the comparison is to, too fast may mean too coarse as well.

This stone has all the highest marks for the particular dealer. As far as polish, and cutting speed.

Jonny,
Thats the other stone Telly showed me. I bought the other one, which I suppose you would never have heard of if I never said anything....

Anyway, Telly said the two were the same, only mine was less "broken." In my experience with mine, the edge off the kiita is only as good as the edge from the previous stone.

So what you are saying is you got the "hotter" of the twin japanese super models?:tongue:

What can you tell me about the family? Is she a Kiita?

Your gonna have to ask Telly about that. I am not knowledgeable on the J-nat stuff.  But yeah, mine doesn't have that "piece" missing out of the side. Nakayama Kiita, meaning its of the yellowish color grade & from the mine while under the control of the Nakayama family IIRC. Damn fine finishing stone.

This is what he told me before I paid for the stone. I gave him a price range saying I wanted the best performance I could get. Sure I wanted a pretty stone, but not want I needed.
That's the thing, 'best' really means nothing in this context. It's only best for a particular task. For example from the naniwa superstones line the best hone for setting a bevel is 1000 if you want quick job, or 3000 if you don't mind spending more time.

"This dealer has ratings that are HGAL - hardness, grit, abrasion (speed), lightness (feedback). The highest rating he gives for GAL is 3++++.
Right, we've seen this seller on ebay, and I'm not sure how his system of ratings translates to honing straight razors. When I bought japanese hone the seller hones and shaves with straight razors and since he had actually tested the hone he told me how it performs in an actual honing of straight razors. I didn't want the hardest or the finest hone possible, but some people will want that.

The Nakayama I bought was as described, awesome yet not perfect. The BST thread had pictures that showed every flaw, and the communication via pms here was very good. It gives me a superb edge, as described.

Lets be honest about what high-end natural stones are: pricey and varied, and what they aren't: good value for the money spent. Go past a modest finishing hone and you encounter a typhical dimnishing returns situation. Is it worth it? Yes, but not for everyone.
